Got water, we’ve got food

crates, milk crates to organize things in stack them on top they’re everywhere great for organize things

a tent, great if you have a car bugging out, gives you more things to bring may be useful

thermarest mat, different scales or modules of bugging out, mini kit, bug out bag, bug out vehicle, bug out location, from smallest to largest you’re gonna have a lot of the contents will be the same but more elaborated the more space you have

in your office, people may over look, bug out bag in car all day, if something is obstructing your ability to get home from work, plan to deal with an emergency with family together, get out of your home get somewhere else some how

bug out bag in your car, most people can’t just haul in a giant bug out bag into work and just post that up, so beneath that if you have what they call a mini kit, then a miniaturized set of tools and cordage, anyone can carry a multitool

go to work with regular backpack, small scale first aid, high nutrient energy bars, water bottle, at a bug out location that’s your ultimate survival retreat with a permaculture garden growing itself, on it,

well

mother load of preps out there, but if you scale down into you pocket you should have miniaturized version of that

boy scout hand book, fire and cordage zine, whole point of having all these things, do these drills and use them regularly, not have to dig them out in an emergency

in our fast paced busy lives its hard to set aside time to go and set up drill scenarios and just spend time playing with our toys

endeavor to do that more, if you don’t have the time, at least having it is good so when you need it there, but there’s skills that go along with every piece of equipment, just makes a sharper learning curve

scaling up of equipment, a little bit of cordage on body at all times, to more in bug out bag, to whole roll in car, to spool at a bug out retreat property, build tree forts, do all kinds of stuff

first aid kit, vehicle first aid kit, mini flares, hazard signal, basic tools in the bug out vehicle

duct tape, dust mask, hammer, saw, pliers, pry bar, basic tools, tool box type of things, jumper cables, air compressor, battery starter, bailing wire, oil funnel

not even being a crazy survivalist to roll with tools, it’s common sense

a jack, spare tire

extra dog food

dogs are great for traveling

bring something that would make the dog feel at ease, enough water for dog, or animal companion

training dog friend how to hunt

cats are good but difficult to take traveling

mobile office,

checking air pressure, oil, fluids

keeping a half to ¾ ot gas tank at all times, don’t wait til the gauge is in the red

major congestion in emergency, rolling out of house almost on empty, if you can carry extra fuel safely, if it’s difficult to have reserve fuel, at the very least know you have plenty of gas in the actual tank at all times, emergencies come with short notice

you’ll be stuck, at the risk of being rounded up in some kinda of human zoo, won’t be wild and free

didn’t have budget to show crazy urban meltdown situation, insinuation, with vehicle we weren’t able to get to bug out location, had to leave the vehicle and haul on our backs would we could

scenario is, you have bug out bag at all times in vehicle, at the point where you can’t go further with vehicle, if the streets were clogged, they’re corralling people, decide to go on foot, planned out, have maps, going to retreat into the woods and wait it out, if you’re in your bug out vehicle with your bug out bag, take things out of the bug out vehicle you can pack with you

do a little inventory and swapping of things, get a little more food, a little more water

we’re gonna go set up a stealth camp, near the car, continued access to the bug out vehicle, get a couple days of stuff then go back and replenish supplies, think of it as your little canteen

foraging on the secret wilderness retreat

always know what you’re eating, do the proper plant identification

legal disclaimer, don’t eat anything unless you know what it is

rule of 3s you can live 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 months without love, that’s what Ron Hood says

a lot of times people in survival situations just assume that the thing they need to do first is find food, get panicked crazy and desperate thinking they need to find food right away, less circumstance where you’re gonna have limited access to oxygen, what really matters is to know that say you’re stranded somewhere, it could be a desert, it could be high mountain where it’s gonna get cold, could be tropical, you’re gonna get wet, first thing you’d want to do is secure your shelter, 3 hours of exposure to extreme weather conditions could kill you or weaken your immune system, gear/maps could get destroyed, first thing you want to do is build shelter or dig shelter, construct shelter, according to rule of 3s, next you’d have 3 days after building shelter to find water, once secured that, go on to search for food, you can survive on your own reserves for 3 weeks before you’re dead, monks can go astounding periods without foods, depending on how much energy you’re using, hiking out using a lot of energy, lost trying to find way back

main point, you have a good solid 3 weeks if you cover shelter and water, before you’re at the point of desperation of going into universal edibility test

levels of danger eating anything wild, it’s own endogenous biochemical toxins, then the exogenous toxins it can absorb from environment

weeds are scabs of the earth, able to draw out and into themselves high levels of toxins, can be dangerous even if on their own they’re medicinal, it can be a double edge sword

you don’t have to cut corners to eat right away

definitely worth waiting to do it right

hanging out with eucalyptus, not to be ingested but good for anti septic, vapor rub

eating mustard greens

guitar and flute to lift the spirits, playing judas priest, breaking the law

raw natural food part of any beings diet, it’s gotta be competitive with the hottest crack sugar food on the shelf, it’s all doable, all the textures can be made with blender, dehydrator, food processor

hand crank, bicycle powered blenders, old school cider presses, grain grinders, all be refashioned without electricity, human powered stuff

how to start fires, that could be a whole series

this was good for us, this drill, to be able to document in this way is cool, not only serve our purpose of testing, felt really good to do, felt really go know that we really did put a lot of good stuff together, we didn’t pack up the car we could have found out, we really didn’t know what would fit, we had an idea, this was our first drill

got it several gallons of water, tons of food, we did a month or so before that, gone through everything we owned and compartmentalized things in easy bug out

what would we not want to leave that would be sentimental, what would be be screwed if we left, ready to go as ready as possible, very procedural, went down check list of procedures to get things out of certain places

after thought, the way we had that nice blanket laid out on the ground, put everything on there, have a good visual aid to know what you’re taking, what you may be missing, if you had stuff scattered in different areas even if you checked off that you have it

everything we took we laid out on the blanket first, if anything would be left behind it would have to be left on that, easy to check that than the whole house

very cool to have done that and get that experience

again we’re definitely not experts, this was two people who are scared shitless of what it would be like to be trapped in a city when shit it the fan, started process of self educating, equipping, starting to explore well established subculture of survivalism, from diy punk to eco punk , shows, touring so many skill sets and experience similar to modern survivalists

there’s a big gap though between diy anarcho punks are doing that’s survivalistic, between wilderness survival, or ex-military types, a lot to be learned from those folks who are out there, don’t have exact same political philosophies, practical skills and knowledge, hippies too, out in the hills, ex-military, tactical training, army field manuals, tying knots, carry someone injured, build shelter

punks anti technology anti system life style unfortunately lack that hard traditional american sort of roughing it back woods, hick type of skill sets, you have a lot more of that background that I do, I didn’t get to experience in my childhood, but you definitely had more of that experience as a backwoods girl, cave lady, you bring a lot more to me and a lot more experience and background, again just trying to figure this stuff out with not a lot of money, good personal experience here and there

I would just encourage people to get ideas, get fired up to go and start the process, never ending process of preparing for personal , regional, national, global disasters of all kinds

a lot of disaster commonality, if you’re prepared for one thing you’re also prepared for other things

more resilient on many levels, cross applies to anything you encounter

we were intense about doing it every day for months at a time, studying consistently for about a year, this is like our final exam

had lots of teachers, listened to a lot of podcasts, a lot of videos, really took notes, documented went out

we didn’t just have ideas that all of this would be really cool, we actually went out with limited funds, purchased our materials, or diyed our materials, really economical about things but still we really actualized it, that’s really important and really awesome,

part of it was a safety net because me growing up in a safer place, surrounded by a lot of wild areas, then making the adventure of la, what can I do if the city goes down

dad lives in the mountains, hunting and fishing, what are you doing moving to l.a. being very concerned for my well fare

urban environment always under constant threat of being extinct

good way to connect with the earth

deliberate life, tried to be health, smart, efficient, safe, secure, prepared, resilient, self sufficient

Starting to load the car, water dry food

checking things off the list

really are doing this, the dry food, bullets beans band aids, bag of beans

brown rice, the 5 gallon buckets are most ideal long term food storage units, you can put oxygen absorbers in, keeps critters out, won’t be able to chew their way through it, not as easy as anything in the pantry, isn’t secure

keep your food stuffs very safe from critters, safe from moisture, and actually a company called gamma seal that makes lids with twisting tops

your fingers get chewed up trying to pop off those lids, the standard lids, definitely the optimal food storage units

bagging up electronics in zip lock bags, definitely a smart thing, keep them dry, also to keep wires separated, in emergency don’t want to have to untangle wires from junk drawer

use them to isolate wires

connecting to the internet world, technology

wouldn’t have thought to bring extra battery or generator, using are as generator, being able to still have technology in your life if you have a vehicle

ready to go the moment that shit hits the fan

packing everything, displaying everything we have in here, everything I felt I needed in that bag but the bag was really very small, it’s korean military bag, very small, 3 pouches on side, flap, made from strong canvas

a lot of little things make up my bug out bag, all really important

ongoing inventory of all preps, as I get a pay check I add a couple of things

background on bug out bags, another term for them, important distinction, 72 hour emergency kits, kept in vehicle in the trunk, somewhere safe in a vehicle, main traditional application or concept, if you’re out and about and you need to get from a point of danger to point of safety you can do so on foot with a back strapping pack,

difficult to carry 3 gallons of water, water purification iodine crystals, also knowing about water purification, 3 days would not be practical to pack around, definitely have a means of getting water, you have water bladder, I got collapsible 2 gallon plastic jugs, if you had to set up a camp somewhere, needed to go get water, unfold it, take it back, boil the water, use filtration, purification

going awol, american archetype, doing the walden thing, can’t think of the right classic, going off into the wilderness forever, its not necessarily for that, a lot of overlap, people pack in wilderness survival, magnesium match, water proof matches

hunting gear, fishing gear, first aid kit, anitbiotics, sutcher kits, salts, different things that seemed really necessary, luxury too, to have some of these things

how amazing would that be to be able to have, if you came down with gnarly infection, you had access to an antibiotic

small shovel, 12” dig a hole to use restroom, use it for trapping, use it for collecting water, digging a whole and getting water that way, that drains at the bottom of your whole and tracking with tarp

shovel, since we did this I’ve done more studying, I would fact check everything we’re saying, using shovel to dig yourself a shitter at least 12 inches deep, no where near any water supply, if near stream have to shit dig deep hole far from any water, may want to mark it too, disperse throughout area, don’t just make a giant pit in a camping area, disperse if you can

solar still, a way to get water, a solar still, you dig out a whole, if you create a steam room with sunlight even works when sun’s gone down, mini green house, with plastic sheet, a tarp best is for it to be transparent or translucent

a pot at the bottom of whole, put some greens around your pot, fallen leaves from trees, brush, to kind of release some moisture, collect moisture from top of the tarp, droplets form, water goes down into that, thin piece of tubing

you could suck it out so you don’t have to disturb the tarp

one use of the shovel, also a canvas water bag with plastic lining that you could change in side

little rain poncho, rain gear, dog leash, tarps, warm clothes, wool sweater, long johns, deck of cards for fun, eating utensils, foil, emergency blanket, good for keeping warm, also for sun protection, if you’re lost and you need attention, signal

it looks like there’s pens, two writing pens, one wrapped with fishing line, one wrapped with duct tape, film canisters with fishing weights

pens, to have mini roll of emergency stash of duct tape, applying principle that you have such limited space, you want to cut down on excess objects and weights, make an object multi useful,

to have a pen is so important, because bugging out the idea of bugging out in southern california is really scary, I work on one side of town you work pretty far away, scenario you don’t have access to car or freeway is clogged, a place of meeting, how long do we wait before we move on, is there a second place

idea of letting one another know, I’ve been here, I need you to know that I’ve been here and have moved on, write a note on something, that doesn’t go away

within a survival scenario, something that’s sturdy, and write, I’ve been here, I’ll meet you down the way, having a pen is important

if you wanted to really have fun with it, you can develop different code systems

definitely encrypted numbers, there’s a simple system plus 1 or plus 2 encryption, easy methods as long as everybody in your unit has the key, you’ll know whatever’s written

flourescent tape for wilderness situation, mark you trail

also fishing gear, trapping line, fish weights, fish hooks, knife for fishing, great japanese knife little hook at the knife for gutting fish

lighters, magnesium match, steel wool, matches

steel wool, 4 ought, very fine stuff, its a form of tinder, ignites very well, trying to create friction fire with wood, it’s a hard

you can use a battery, if you connect to battery you can get a spark that will light

light weight transportable instant tinder, ignites really easy will help you get rest of kindling going

tube tent

medical bag, pair of gloves, I work in medical, definitely some latex gloves

gauze, alcohol swabs, antibiotics, ammonia, medical tape, bandages, sutcher kits, ointments, blade, small scalpel, raiser blades, tweasers, pregnancy test

being able to have tampons, not gonna be able to renew them and get them , have to diy it, something that’s useful is a sponge, sterilize it in some boiling water, it will shrink sponge, so find big one, picking out all sand or shell in sea sponge

floss, or really durable string on end of sponge, you can use it internally, if you need to you can take it out and rinse it and let it dry out and re-insert, two or more sponges is kinda handy, cycle them out as they dry, make your own pads, out of all flannels, I’ve seen girls make their own pads and make wings on them and button them around their underwear, do things like that, making them pretty

there are alternatives out there for women for bleeding, I’ve known women who are like whatever I don’t even care, just go to town on bleeding and doing their thing

flow is so light, if you’re really active, you might be hiking a lot, climbing, even if not eating a whole lot of food, period might not be so heavy, those are things you can do that will be in your medical bag also, whole chapter on bugging out

fertilize the garden, recycle nutrients always

also some sentimental stuff, blankets,

a pipe, a flute pipe, pictures, some things for trading, journal their to keep the spirits up and paper, notepads and stuff to log things, draw maps, trails, keep track, or universal edibility test, a million reasons why you’d want to have a solid notebook/journal, could keep you entertained, books

we had books in the vehicle, all pretty practical stuff, if you could afford to have something that would entertain you that would be good too

camera

can opener, head lamp, one of those shaking flash lights, liberty stamps, means of communications, prepaid backup cell phones, phone cards, forever stamps if you circumstances were such that you wanted to send mail, didn’t have money, didn’t want to be seen wanted to be stealth, you have those stamps, regardless of how price goes up, if you have old stamps, it will get bounced, forever stamps, they’re good at that rate

having some of those, having that mindset of what are your redundancies for your communications, something we didn’t mention yet in that notebook, have your contact lists, the idea that if you were to bug out, have 3 destinations, a couple of rally points and three routes to get to those, main idea, if you had to get out of your house and get out of city, state, expect that you don’t want to have one destination, it could fall through, you would want to have at least 3 possible places where you’re post up with self family, family member that lives outside of town or state, or even state park, where there’s water and you could even hunt, bugging out, preps for it, our destinations and routes, did have printed maps, of different routes, and rally points if we were at work, where are we gonna meet if we’re separated and we need to get together in our city before we leave our city, having that documentation, having printed out list of emergency contacts, your own personal medication information, what people to be able to find your emergency contacts, your medical conditions, allergies, careful of how much personal info you have in papers just rolling around with you, if you lose them, potential for identity theft

I would rather have someone steal my identity, take that risk and have documentation I need to be safe if found unconscious or cut off from electricity, computers don’t work, cell phones don’t work, don’t know family members phone numbers, so dependent on speed dialing, voice dialing, going back through the information age, through pencils, big contractors pencil, have to shave it off with a knife, the point is riffing off from forever stamp, so many different ways to back up vital information you’re gonna need, navigation you’re routes, who you’re gonna contact

also had a compass, very important

pepper spray

razor blade, for medical emergencies

matching bags on a lot of things we would go shopping at the surplus store, get two of each, point out things that were unique to mine

machete is the cutting tool of choice if doing anything as far as natural living, low tech gardening to clearing space, its the way to go

a mirror for hygiene and signal mirror

have some sort of mirror, most effective way to signal planes going by, or on ground level from a distance, reflect the sunlight a certain way, clothes pins, for hanging clothes to dry over the fire

handkerchief, good for keeping head cold, dip in water, wrap head or neck, filter large debris out of water, use it to carry or tie things, cover face from dust

dental floss, for sewing, little sewing kits safety pins, rubber bands, fasteners, zip ties, bungee cords, cordage, fishing line, paracord, cup/bowl that can be cooked with, hand wood saw, wire saw, which is great, tiny little strip of jagged wire with two key rings, simple way to cut through wood

there’s a value in having a steel frame pack or pack that has a way to keep the actual mass off of back, airflow, because you can be sweating into the bag, definitely getting clothing wet, dealing with unwanted dampness when it gets colder, create airflow between surface area of pack for long hiking trips

whistle/compass, good for signaling for danger, dealing with bears,

cool concept, a lot of wild animals will tend to want to avoid you rather than confront you if at all possible, most bad situations when you surprise wild animal, they don’t have opportunity to make their own escape, the way to avoid that is to have a bell, or be singing, or clapping, as you’re walking, if you’re scared because you don’t know what’s out there, what helps you lift your spirits, singing or whistling, or jingling, making some musical racket, create sonic buffer zone or shield around you, it alerts animals, they’ll more often than not, clear the way to avoid even being near you

the flute and guitar, not just for campfire, but literally walking through wilderness the more pleasant noise you can make the safer you’ll be

definitely a survival plan should include any type of dog, different breeds that have different…its all training too, extension of your senses so important when facing any danger, beyond our senses as humans, so dulled, untrained, don’t have fine tuning, beyond the bandwidth of our perception

4 legged member of your family, so many different dimensions of safety and security, she’s great to bug out with, learning how to hunt, learning sign language, how to be quiet, make a left on a trail right on a trail, when to be still, for hunting, depending on level of training you give your dog, companion, friend depends on how useful they’ll be to you

jumping on trampoline, japanese style sacred eating table we would cross our legs and that was pretty funny actually, seemed to work pretty well, firm enough to give a nice foundation

good for the spirits to do a little bouncing around, get blood flowing, lymph moving

next we have the diy ramshackled version of the wing chun/jeet kune do wooden dummy, made from a log from a salvage yard, electrical or plumbing pipes, other futuristic post apocalyptic mad max devices, motorcycle helmet, bike tube and stuff, to show self defense training, bugging out

every morning, first thing you’d do is jump on trampoline, work out, do some pull ups, make your breakfast, go jogging around the park

potential for 2012 solar maximum, peak in solar flare activity, the most probably catastrophe that could affect things on national if not global scale

headlines: governments be warned, the grid has a high chance of being crippled for several years

shit hit the fan scenario with maximum scale and impact

evacuation drill depicts what we would do as survival minded folks if we see this and decide we’re getting out of the city

we decided there’s an impending threat, it’s just a drill, experimented with trying to dramatize it, I mainly lack the skills, just being aware that threats exist and apply a logic to what you would do

should I stay or go, survival speak, bug in or bug out

we had to think about it a lot, bugging or out, when is it appropriate, to actually not go to work, or say forget my life I’m going to my bug out space

when is okay to change your whole life on a hunch, it’s a big decision

dry erase board use for lists of stuff we wanted to get

there are different degrees of impact of a SHTF scenario, disaster, crisis, smallest scale, your own personal life, job loss affects just you, everything around you is business as usual, acutely happening in your own life

you should list the threats in your area, southern california, urban rioting, not like people homesteading, people already off the grid

thinking through the threats, what are a few of the major threats that could face us in this area, how long would they eventually last, how long to bug in or bug out, based on this kind analysis

if there’s rioting, we can stay in

potentially still be making money through the internet, if there’s a pandemic, and there’s martial law and there’s rioting, thank god we don’t have to go out and try to buy food and water because we have it stored already, we can bug in safely, a week, 2 weeks, a month, however long

building up supply to have more and more duration, if something’s long term be able to stay

argument for having money saved

what if things are so bad that you won’t still get thrown out

if you don’t have saved money, opposed to credit card debts and living month to month, have the money to pay for your bills have as many months of secure cash, checking or saving so you can stay there, not go to work if you don’t feel safe or comfortable

if you bug out and you do plan to come back, if the threat subsides you’ll still have your home if you’ve saved enough

how american it is, how southern california it is, rioting in los angeles, it did take days, maybe weeks to recooperate, other places may be a really long time, rioting could turn into a war, government vs the people

much different scale for different parts of the world

a lot of places the shit already has hit the fan, it’s post apocalyptic already

came across word, transapocalyptic

the world is in a transapocalyptic state

so many different levels

forecast is the grid is going down, could be anytime, we’re getting out of la

big part of our evolution as lovers is what the hell are we doing in la we should be far far away from danger, living on a permaculture food forest with friends, safe tucked away in the high hills, the dream of escaping the urban jungle, escape from LA Kurt Russel style

notebook, standard protocol, have this in your vehicle as well, check list for what we would do to close the shop, have a list of the things you know you would take, know how to shut off gas, water, turn out lights, unplug things,

have a pair of ankle supporting strong, hopefully water resistant or water proof boots in bug out vehicle or bug out bag

can’t march in fancy shoes

putting on carabiner clips, hasn’t become the biggest craze, but some day I’m going to claim being the founder of the carabiner clip/shoe lace tethering your stuff

you attached one of these to my notebook, to purse, I could never really attach on to my clothes, used to wear a lot of skirts, dresses, puffy stuff, not a lot of pockets

there it is right when you need it, notebook, wallet

I clipped something onto one of the loops that holds the strap of your purse

cell phones are really slippery, have a tendency to slide out of things, a string, something floss, something strong, be able to clip it, it could save your life

it’s awesome

raw food diet, guerrilla gardening

1200 watt power inverter, got it rigged up to car battery, mainly good for appliances, ive got the 150 watt one, good for laptop and cell phone

use your car as a generator, every vehicle is a generator, not most efficient, fact is if it’s running, you can be charging things, in a bug out/SHTF ability to power different tools, lights, extra fuel, emergency, do most of what you can in a house with running your engine

if power goes out, on your property you still have auxillary power if you consider your vehicle a generator, if you have a power inverter you can go out to your car

filling up little bottle of soap, need to pack hygiene stuff in a bug out bag, if you’re out facing danger, having to hit the road, be out in urban or wild bugging out situation, the need to stay as clean as possible is a really vital need, most of what is gonna get you is gonna be infections, small cuts and scrapes

hospital jammed up, in hiding, whatever it is

first aid kit, extra medicine

anything you need to stay hygienic its gonna be even more important if you don’t’ have a shower, can’t get help if you need it

bucket gardens, I love to garden, I loved to go out and just really had a hard time of not having any type of ground earth, to make compost or garden or just feel beneath my feet, living in la

you came up with this idea, of bucket gardens, tried experiments, pallet gardens, what was the measurements

determined we needed a lot more soil for that to work

bucket gardens were great, deep enough, got a lot of food out of those guys

lots of salad clippings, onions, different types of herbs, lots of parsley basil swiss chard, collard greens, tomatoes

we were very busy and definitely could have perfected it more, totally cool though that the cut and come again, gardening term, eating off of them a couple times a day

whole concept of cut and come again, basically holding back the life cycle of the plant, not let it go to seed, don’t want it to bolt, the leaves start to get bitter, more rigid, end its life cycle at that point, go to seed

always wanting to continue that process, the more you cut it back and eat off of it, the more it will produce

the real bug out which was when we left the place, it wasn’t a solar storm, definitely a point where we had to move on from the space, all the compost got taken to a real garden, all the buckets found a home there

I don’t know how many gallons but basically probably like between 2-4 cubic feet of space in each basin, several cubic feet of water in basins, then there’s a couple inches, probably a good 2 to 3 maybe 4 square feet of space on either side of the basins, like a table top, but there’s this lip that comes up the top, you could fill the basins,

water would go above the basins, extra couple of inches that spans the left and right, higher flat surfaces, that makes two different depths, so much like what you’re wanting to do in designing a full size pond, mimic natural earth formations, the outer perimeter gradation of shallow areas, different plants like different levels of depth of water

so the more gradations of shelves in a pond constructed, designer pond the better so that you can actually have plantings at different levels

in this case with that two inch area at either side of the basins that’s where you can have micro greens that are subirrigated

if you keep water level topped off, two big shallow ends and two big deep ends, the seed starting can happen in the thin shallow area

being post plastic, I’m thinking those little tera cotta pots, putting sand in the submerged part, then potting soil or seed starting mix above the water level, it will be consistently moist but will not drown the roots

giving them a gradation, from total submersion to moist, to drier as you get towards the top of the organic growing medium, soil, compost or sifted mix

that’s gonna be a hedge against the dry climate where, nursery in a climate this dry, desiccating winds, draw moisture away, this buys time you have time to take trips away, its a reservoir

I first saw this done probably back in 2009 at a friends farm where they had a green house, subirrigation set up, lot of seedlings in those 4 inch plastic pots

I mostly used plastic, long storage trays those have worked well, though in the sun, plastic is a problem, if it’s getting beaten by the sun, it just turns to peanut brittle, it just breaks apart

this is a dream come true, to have this sink thing to work with, pulled it out of a trash heap, dusted her off

it’s got some holes, doesn’t have legs, not in ideal places, but got it hoisted up and next thing will be to experiment with a non toxic way of patching these holes

I’ll leave it a surprise, it may be a laughable embarrassing experiment, I’ll spare myself the humiliation, if it works I’ll be very proud to announce it

you could do so many things to have the most hygienic toxin free growing set up and you’ll end up using some component of some kind, for plumbing, or irrigation or patching something and you’re introducing another, no matter how hard you try , even the rubber sink stoppers you lose a point on that

unless if what I’m trying to do seal the holes works, I can use it on the stoppers

I’m not trying to be hypochondriac, or super neurotic, I’m just at a point where it’s more about art, there’s an artisanship, a standard of integrity I want to now aspire to, slow down to a pace of where I’m not trying to cut corners

I’ve grown food in buckets, feed chickens with road cones, I remember what those things smelled like after a day in the sun, I’m over it, no I’m over it, it’s worth it to have a this more refined and elegant experience

if I want to have a healing center where people go to experience nourishment at a higher standard, also the alchemy the intention, it matters

eliminating those variables I’m ready for it

it was nice to have already prefabricated perfectly sized sifting apparatus, hardware cloth, about ½ square grid, more sturdy, and smaller cell mesh

mainly sifting compost so you can get smaller grain material

so seedlings, sprouts don’t have to work too hard to push around, they’ll do it they’ll break through concrete, but why not make it easier

the feel the joy of sifting compost, spiritual alchemy, really a nice meditation to do that, go through that process,

there’s this deluxe, almost double the size of the volume of a normal wheel barrow, two wheels, still tilts up and down, one of the most ergonomic , it’s like an suv or a truck, of a wheel barrow

this sifter that was already made, a frame of one by one, I don’t know where you would see them, almost like, more like 1.5, a little more than 1 inch, about the width of the stake if you were to imagine the stakes that go through a vampires heart, like the ones in Lost Boys, 1x1s or there abouts

looks like a window frame, some people add extra hardware or extra miter cuts to make it more sturdy

sifter just drops on top of the suv wheel barrow so you can shovel loads of compost on it

lift, shape, rubbing circles, instant breast massage training system, is it just me am I just a pervert? Or am I doing the Mr. Miyagi, wax on wax off version of tantra, could be a breasts, could be a gay butt massage, I’ve done it all

any time you have a chance to sift compost it will up your game in the bedroom and on the massage table

enjoy that process and know you’re being a part of the care that’s gonna make whatever you plant very happy, whatever seeds you’re trying to grow, you’re doing them a favor

I do believe I stumbled on a couple of mullein plants, I won’t give a huge discourse on mullein , I’ve used in herbal cigarettes, helps to quit smoking

kicking the habits of nicotine cigarettes, what to still have the ritual, I’ve had herbalist friends, lovers, who’ve done amazing jobs with transitional herbal cigarettes, they’d argue beneficial for the lung, certainly not as harmful or addictive, I enjoyed it, it was uplifting, adding value in a way more holistic sense

people are gonna smoke weed, why not through in some other herbal ingredients

I’ll have to have someone on to talk about it sometime

I’ve phased in and out of smoking cigarettes, at least since 2016, 2017, its been a couple years at least since I could no longer stomach cigarettes at all, I’ll tell that story another time

mullein it’s an amazing fuzzy soft totally adorable, stoked to find that, and encourage that and look for it in other places,

also very exciting there are at least 2 or more varieties of sage

mexican sage, I’ve worked with it before in my landscaping career, been able to score a bunch of it, it’s weird, when you burn as a smudge, it actually kinda smells in a good way like tobacco if you have any affections towards it, I do

I don’t like the smell of what smokers end up smelling like and I was one of them, it’s not like the ash tray smell, it’s the best of the aromatics of tobacco smell,

doesn’t seem to be used as a smudge, but because I came up on a bunch, I thought I’d try it, it’s definitely not like the epic white sage, which I will be planting on the land

so mexican sage, that’s there

I was told, this other variety, was called sweet sage, I feel like someone just told me there’s another planet in the galaxy and the planet is even more lush than earth, discovering this sage, it really upstages white sage, the why it smells, alive on the bush and also the smudge factor of it, I don’t know how I’ve never encountered it before, never even heard of it before, to me it’s the earth’s fucking best kept secret, the most epic, beyond white sage, smudgable, I’ll have to look into it’s other uses

I’m sure the natives really made the most out of this plant, it’s amazing

I have to book up on the latin names, and actually I have somebody I will be asking about it next week, who is an absolute geek expert on all things california native sage

hopefully you’ll love it as much as I do and steward it’s natural habitat and want it to flourish

if you love white sage like I love white sage, and you could imagine that it’s possible that something could even take you further into that realm of absolute heart melting love of a plant for its properties, of purification of the mind, the smoke of it, the smell of it

probably one of the bigger highlights

Basic Preparedness Prepping Pyramid
The term prepping refers to the process by which you incrementally increase your level of preparedness for emergency/disaster on a continuum from short-term self-reliance to long-term self-sufficiency.

The term preps can be defined as tangible items or systems that you acquire or build and use in prepping. While some people may include intangible things such as weapons training, drills, skill development, etc. in their definition of preps, for the purpose of this piece, the focus is on physical items.

The stereotype that survivalists live alone in underground bunkers in the middle of nowhere is rarely accurate. The media sensationalizes the extreme cases, but the reality is that a holistic family oriented survival plan involves several locations and several different scales. I’ve organized the list below in order of scale from the smallest to the largest caches of preps in a pyramidal model to represent overlapping zones.

Body

Preppers promote taking some level of responsibility for your safety and security by not only developing self-defense, first-aid, and other survival skill sets, but by carrying implements, tools, devices, and supplies on your person at all times. Having preps on your person isn’t only so you can help yourself and your family, it’s also so you can help others in need.

What you carry on your person is often referred to as “Every Day Carry” or “EDC”. On this scale your preps will include an array of smaller survival gear items. The number of items you carry will be determined by the amount of pockets, belt accessories, carabiners, etc. you’re comfortable with. Fashion and function can be hard to reconcile, but it’s worth an attempt. Many people walk through the world without care or thought of the potential for anything to go wrong. The expectation that something bad will “never happen to me” is a symptom of what is clinically called “normalcy bias”. This is a psychological tendency to avoid considering and logically preparing for disruptions in modern business-as-usual life.

Unfortunately if we encounter bad guys on the street, chances are police won’t arrive on the scene until the incident is over. If we’re in a disaster situation, emergency medical responders may not be able to get to us in the time it takes to die or become seriously ill from preventable causes such as bleeding, dehydration, infection, etc.

Items often carried every day by preppers may include some of the following:

cutting tools, fire making tools, multi-tool, parachute cord, led light, compass, first-aid items (band-aids, alcohol pads), whistle, water purification tablets, emergency medical info card, list of emergency contacts, bandana, cell phone with additional charged battery, flash drive, notepad, writing utensil, “forever” postage stamps, prepaid phone card, cash, checks, herbal energy pills, p38 can opener, water bottle, pepper spray, misc. legal self-defense implements…

Bug Out Bag (BOB)

The “Bug out Bag”, a.k.a. “BOB”, is the survivalist slang for what is more officially known as a 72-hour emergency kit. However, the critical distinction is that a BOB must be in the form of a back-pack that can allow you to move on foot, hands-free.

On this scale of preps, you may have some of the same items that you’d have for EDC, however in greater lengths, quantities, container sizes, etc. as you’ll have the main column of the bag, plus many extra pockets, compartments, straps, clips, etc.

Here’s a list of some of the items often found in or attached to BOBs.

More fire making tools, more parachute cord, flashlight, batteries, candles, first aid kit, extra medications, hand crank/solar emergency weather radio, signal mirror, toilet paper, tweezers, toothbrush, misc. toiletries, sun block, bug spray, warm clothes (kept dry in a large zip lock bag), rain gear, gloves, hat, sun glasses, mess kit (eating dish/utensils), lightweight pot for cooking/boiling water, salt/spices, three days worth of dry food, hooks/sinkers, wild edible plant identification books, bigger water bottle, water filtration devices, 5 gallon collapsible water jug, small bottle of bleach, folding shovel, wire saw, sewing needles and floss, pen or pencil wrapped with duct tape, pen or pencil wrapped with fishing line, full size notebook, envelopes, plastic bags, garbage bags, survival manuals, entertainment devices such as books or games, documentation package (including emergency contacts, local emergency service provider phone numbers, evacuation procedures/plans/packing checklists, multiple evacuation routes, encrypted bank account, social security, etc. numbers, list of family medications/medical conditions, etc.), maps, sleeping bag, space blanket, tube tent, therma-rest pad, tarp, poly sheeting, legal self-defense tools carried in accordance with local law…

It helps to separate and categorize your items into zip-lock bags and distribute the bags into to different pockets and compartments for easy access. The bags also help keep your gear dry.

This sounds like a lot of stuff but if properly organized and compacted a lot of it can comfortably fit in/on a large camping pack. Depending on the nature of the situation, you may want to drop a lot of weight so you can cover more ground on foot. In Saving Private Ryan, the scene in which the translator joins the unit shows how a combat-inexperienced soldier tries to pack everything he was issued in his bag for the mission, and is made to leave most of it behind by his fellow soldiers. This is a useful bit of insight demonstrating that “the more you know the less you need,” and that you have to be realistic about your ability to haul more than the bare minimum.

Your normal commuting vehicle (which may or not be your “Bug Out Vehicle”) should always contain your BOB so that it will be accessible wherever you drive. Storing it in the trunk also ensures you’ll never forget it at home, and when you need to lighten the load and take a few items out, you can lock them in your trunk or locked box in a flatbed truck.

Of course if you’re riding a bus, if you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, or riding a bike, it won’t be feasible to bring your BOB with you. In those situations you’ll be relying on EDC, or a smaller backpack with a selection of items from your BOB depending on the situation. For example, if you’re hiking, you’d want to grab a selection of items from your BOB and put them in your day pack.

Most importantly, every member of your family should have a BOB, and every BOB should contain the same version of the documentation package. In an emergency you’ll then be able to co-ordinate your response based on documented protocols that everyone has the current printed version of.

Bug Out Vehicle (BOV)

Your “Bug Out Vehicle” may be a huge 4-wheel-drive monster or a compact car. Older diesel trucks are preferable as they have less electrical components that can fail, and they can be converted to run on veggie oil. Whatever you prefer and have the means to acquire can serve as your BOV, though traditionally it’s a truck or SUV. All that’s required is that it be stocked with extra preps and be equipped with accessories that will optimize performance and provide redundancies in evacuation scenarios.

Besides simply scaling up some of your preps (such as a 5 gallon bucket of dry food that preferably doesn’t require cooking, one or more gallons of water, a larger first aid kit, etc. the following are some preps specific to the BOV:

Flares, basic tools, spare parts (headlights, belts, bulbs, etc.), quarts of oil, extra fluids, map books, solar power system, power inverter, spare tire, snow chains, jack, blankets, tent, boots, entrenching tool, books, gas can (keep empty unless it can be stored safely and securely), more legal self-defense tools transported in accordance with local law, any other large utility/emergency items that don’t fit in or are not appropriate for your BOB.

Every family vehicle should be to some degree prepped to function as a BOV, even if there’s one larger vehicle that’s designated as the main BOV.

Workplace/School

This refers to the place where most of your time is spent outside of the home, wherever that may be. The goal would be to get your colleagues or co-workers on-board with prepping so that they collaborate and pool resources to ensure that there are preps on-site. Whether in a basement, storage closet, or under your desk you should try to get some amount of food/water/medical supply storage set up. If nothing else, try to convince whoever’s in charge to at least have emergency kits on-site that are sized appropriately for the number of people in your office, dorm, etc.

Most likely if done right, you can store a lot without it being a nuisance and have some sense of security knowing that if you end up stuck there, you won’t die of dehydration, starvation, or mild injuries.

Home

Without being too extreme, you should see your home as your fort. It’s the place where you let down your guard at night and go to sleep. It’s the place where you raise your family, or are being raised by your family. It’s where you should feel the most safe and secure, and where you should have the most control of your survival. Again, many of the prep items you’ll want at home have been listed above, but here are some preps that are unique to the home:

large water tanks, rain water catchment systems, months to years worth of long term food storage in the form of canned foods and dry foods including your favorite grains, legumes, seeds (for eating, sprouting, and planting), nuts, spices, dried herbs, dried fruits, etc. in 5 gallon bucket/mylar bag/oxygen absorber kits on a rotation system so you “eat what you store and store what you eat”, sprout jars, green house, permaculture garden (food forest if possible), irrigation systems, herbal medicine cabinet, organic recycling center (i.e. compost, vermiculture, humanure, etc), guard dog(s), livestock, food dehydrator, canning equipment, solar power system with battery bank, more legal weapons, low and high tech security systems, toiletry reserves, fuel reserves (gas, firewood, etc.), generator, full camping gear for the whole family, bigger/more specialized hand/power tools, fire-proof lock box for important documents, back up computers, back up external hard drives, lots of useful practical/instructional books and videos, cash, precious metal reserves, large self-assembled or store bought emergency kits…

Bug Out Location (BOL)

The “Bug Out Location” a.k.a. “BOL” or “survival retreat” is your ultimate destination in the case of forced or voluntary evacuation from your normal place of residence. Ideally it would be far out of the urban and suburban zones though not necessarily totally isolated. For those who can afford the luxury, the BOL is a piece of rural land that you own and have put some kind of legal temporary or permanent inhabitable structure on (trailer, teepee, yurt, cabin, house, natural building, etc.)

If you don’t have the luxury to buy land, you may discover that you have relatives living in the countryside, or friends living on farms with whom you can pre-arrange to stay with under an agreement that you’ll pay rent, or do work-trade.

No matter how you gain access to a temporary or permanent living situation for you and your family, what matters is that you have a plan in place. The plan should ensure that you have a main BOL and several fall back locations if the main location is inaccessible, and have multiple routes to each location. It’s also important to work out a system whereby if members of your family or group reach a certain rally point, there’s a predefined way to “post” inconspicuous communications about who’s reached that point, when they got there, and where they left to.

In terms of the scales of preps, the main BOL will often have the largest stockpile of preps when you factor in the ability to hide or bury large caches and the ability to establish permaculture edible forest gardens, ponds, springs, streams, swales, wood lots, wind power, solar power, micro-hydro systems, etc. Ultimately the ideal BOL would be a rural homestead. However the extent to which it’s developed by the time you need it will be determined by how much time, energy, and money you can afford to put into it while you’re not actually living on it.

In rural zones, the land itself is a prep. The more you do to prep the landscape, the more yields you’ll produce that are regenerative. In an apartment or small urban lot, you’re usually not able to access and produce renewable resources on the scale needed to be self-sufficient. Urban preps are generally only going to serve for a finite period of self-reliance until the supplies run out. It’s worth noting that in both urban and rural contexts, self-sufficiency is rarely achieved on a household level, rather it requires the functional interdependence of a small community.

Ideally if you’re “bugging out” to your BOL, you’ll have taken as many of the preps from the smaller levels of the pyramid with you so you’ll be combining preps as well.

The BOL is typically seen as the end point of the game where if you’re successful at making it there alive you’ll be relatively safe, secure, and supplied. However, most preppers acknowledge to varying degrees and extremes that to be prepared while being surrounded by the ill-prepared is a recipe for disaster. Generally, the higher the population density, the greater the risk of being jumped, besieged, or raided. So the more remote you are, the less likely the ill-prepared will be to expend the energy to find and take your provisions. There’s a trade-off though which is that the further you are from at least a small town, the fewer services are available. Also, without neighbors (who you may need to rely on to save your life someday or even just barter with) your survivability and quality of life might be diminished.

Re-Establishing a Culture of Preparedness

No individual, family, or group is an island. Ideally the largest step of the prepping pyramid would be a culture of preparedness wherein redundancy is built into every system that the population relies on for basic survival. It’s not utopian, a hundred years ago it was common sense. According to prominent prepper Stewart Rhodes in episode 602 of The Survival Podcast, “during the Cold War, this country had enough grain to feed all of its people for three years in the event of a nuclear winter, now they have enough to feed all of us half a loaf of bread.”
Our ancient and recent ancestors had the wisdom to live by the ways of the ant, not the grasshopper (see Aesop’s fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper”). In the modern survivalist movement, it’s accepted that winter is coming again as it has in the past and will in the future.
Apocalypse would be an easy way out, but in all likelihood, the world will continue to cycle with nature, not end. We’ll have to choose to be prepared. Moreover, it doesn’t take TEOTWAWKI (“the end of the world as we know it”) for any individual or family to experience an acute localized disaster. Be it a job loss, an injury, death of a loved one, etc, when the s**t his hit your fan, it’s your preps that will carry you through in a state of relative comfort and help buffer desperation.

Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast has provided numerous planning and strategy tools such as the “threat probability matrix” and notion of “disaster commonality” (see episode 166) to help people identify the threats that are most likely to occur in their personal lives, location, climate, etc. and understand that in many ways the fundamental preps and planning needed to survive anything from the “mundane to the insane” are the generally the same.
It’s important while prepping to be creative and make it fun-based not fear-based. Thanks to the modern survival movement there’s a fail-safe principle built-in which essentially states that whatever you do to be prepared for disaster should improve your quality of life whether or not s**t hits the fan! The best example is growing some portion of your own food.

Just avoid panic buying. As with Permaculture the best solutions are small and slow. Continually incrementally add to your preps when grocery items go on sale, when you get extra cash, when you can score something on Craigslist, when there’s a yard sale, etc. Start small, make it fun, get into the groove and you’ll enjoy having a more sensible lifestyle that actually empowers you to be an evermore safe, secure, confident, and dutiful cosmic citizen, community member, and family member.

TP: Jessica Moon, old dear friend, along the ride of tantra punk journey since very beginning around 2013, was shocked to find that name hadn’t already been turned into some sort of persona online, hopefully I’ve done my best

she’s way beyond a supportive friend, an inspiration, somebody who’s kept me on a very ethical and conscious path, has given me lots of great feedback

talk about her path, eco psychology, forest bathing, many ways to look at benefits of spending time in nature, deep personal journeys of long distance hiking

JM: working on getting people outdoors, help people see benefits of being immersed in nature, millennials , anyone can benefit, remove barriers to help people really benefit

start when I younger and in college I was a sexual health peer mentor for my university, worked with my peers to educate them on health topics, disseminated health and hygiene products through the outreach center, help become more empowered

after graduated, joined nature center, help plan ecological programs and events, natural conservation for the city, got to work with variety of people

it was a very beautiful experience to be intimately connected with these people, very active motivated hikers, some people who’d never spent time even at a park

really wanted to help people have a more enjoyable, more intimate experience with natural world

then got into corporate world, for about 5 years, it was good to learn a lot of skills, but definitely aching, stress, heaviness of not having that immersion that I used to have

caught up in career, societies idea of success, lost connection with self, deep connection with natural world

year, decided to hike pacific crest trail, had been training, reconnecting with mountains, beaches, when I took the leap, and left for the trail, such a transformation from being immersed in the wilderness, back country for 5 months, feel completely at peace now that I’ve had that experience, affirmed, not everybody can take that much time off their life

but any amount of time is so beneficial, now that I’m back, into the science, philosophy, how to get more nature time into our busy lives, liberating motivating

TP: want to get into the drama of this whole arch of preparing, doing some permaculture the other day, mentioning we were gonna talk about this, the PCT, how do people survive, you can’t bring a semi truck water tank that drives behind you, what are the amenities on the trail, he said people will send selves care packages, I don’t really have a clue

JM: the resupply logistics, first, instead of one really long trip, think of as series of 3 to 5 day, sometimes more than 7 days depending on snow, how quick you hike, generally 3 to 5 days, given that , hiker hunger, metabolism working so hard, never felt hunger like that before, if you think about it as you’re going town to town, long series of small backpacking trips, you can self packages ahead of time, my strategy was I resupplied in town, if you’re lucky, supermarkets, sometimes just gas station, generally you know, or if you didn’t ask around, anticipate that, if you go get into a town with a big grocery store, buy food, ship it forward, only did for really small towns, didn’t want to eat pop tarts and snicker bars, backpacking food, if you don’t go really expensive route, has a lot more nutrients compared to options like instant ramen, after a while, can’t eat this any more, try to mix it up, hit up bulks, blessing to find bulk section, keeping an open mind, would have been hard if I had any dietary restrictions if I was vegan or gluten intolerant, I would have done more sending myself ahead of time, its really not that much cheaper or convenient to send yourself the boxes ahead of time, you’re tastes change

you don’t have a car, last thing you want to do is walk more

TP: from prepper survivalist world, lot of people in fantasy land, vision of how their gonna be so fit, prowess, bad ass, when zombie apocalypse happens, but they’re not conditioning in the mean time, but the experience of doing this endurance drill, makes me think everything has to be so tightly economized, efficiency, variables to consider, you’re probably better prepared for anything to go wrong, then people who make a whole life style out of being a prepper, tripping me out

could you tell me about some of the sort of dietary life hacks that you came up with, as some one doing this frugally, out of necessity, on a budget, how to have healthy food and not junk food

JM: does take a toll, body type can’t just eat anything, when I was on trail, I was like omg I can eat chips and candy, I really felt terrible, I really need to take care of myself, I was like okay I really need to change the trajectory of my nutrition, took a lot of supplements, glucosamine , multivitamin, try to pick up juice shakes, I needed that because when you’re on the trail, you have to consider weight right, weight expense and convenience

for example, you can get tuna packets, just a staple for hikers, thing about them, not terribly expensive, but not cheap either, on cost, in the circle of the through hikers, most people agree it’s about $1000 a month, on a tighter budget its possible to hike less, you’re gonna be spending less time in town, if you’re a social person its a fun part of the experience to explore the town

if you’re on a tight budget its definitely possible to do the hike on less, buy the food in bulk previously

dehydrating food at home and sending forward, people get sick of the same food, but you can spend a lot more on the trail as well, stay in hotel, one bed vs 6 hikers, or alcohol, or deserts, depends on person, average person not super luxurious is about $1000, barrier to entry is not accessible to everybody, it is a big trip, felt very privileged that I had opportunity

TP: bullet points, staple macro nutrients, can feel you on the weight and price, on that path as urban survivalist, trying to figure out what my pallet will enjoy and what my guts will handle, I could have the most Bourgeoisie, organic fresh catered diet to the maximum degree of what I know is the ideal, but if I did that I wouldn’t be able to do anything else, joke about “whole paycheck”

but I do believe in my heart of hearts that there are life hacker ways to have extreme frugality, but have extreme nourishment, bulk, group buys, I’m curious for you, fats, proteins, carbohydrates in that framework, stuff you could tolerate the longest, didn’t make you sick, sweet spot of weight and cost, ramen doesn’t cut it

JM: biggest thing for me, that I bough dehydrated vegetables, basically a soup mix, in bulk, just add it to everything, find the vegetables that you like, if you have a dehydrator, I would say incorporating vegetables into your diet no matter what, can eat dried meat, jerky, bison bars, sausage, tuna or chicken pouches, but if you just have that, you’re lacking that balance,

really enjoyed dried, pre prepared beans, really not that expensive, compared to bison bar, or higher end nut butters, just dried beans, make sure they’ve been dehydrated as cooked beans, they’re like bean flakes, if you’re vegan or something, or if body can’t tolerate fat anymore, its really high fat out there, powered humus also an option

sunflower seeds are really cheap

also drink powders, couldn’t handle the sugar, protein powders keep you full

cheeses work really well, lactose intolerant, but a popular lunch was a flour tortilla, summer sausage, and hard cheese

things like spam, powdered eggs, dehydrated milk, I really enjoyed dried veggies, dried fruits

chilli mangos was a treat, new technologies for much lighter, dehydrated and freeze dried veggies and fruits

really liked raw stuff, everything was so dry, and processed, but things like nutritional yeast, everything but the bagel package, sauce packets, miso soup, chicken noodle soup, powdered taco mix

lots of sodium and preservatives, but they’re light, cheap, last a long time, if in a pinch they have something to offer

I just bit the bullet and got green juices, or super food mixes whenever I could afford it

avoid ramen, so many other things available, entire bagels, last for a few days, instant rice and potatoes, always a staple, nan flat bread, corn tortillas don’t last very well, whole slices of bread, couscous was really popular

you have you’re good old trail mix, mixing it up and making it different, you really start to despise it

TP: shifting into more paleo and keto trend if you will, and so I’ve been experimenting a lot with build seeds, grinding into a more palettable form, powdered tahini, from bulk sesame seeds, grinding down to pumpkin seeds, mixing with coconut oil, like bread and butter, get that experience but it’s low carb, more protein, then having that fat, thinking about weight factor

were people bringing tubs of coconut oil or was it just too much weight, olive oil or other oils, calorie dense but you can’t eat that that much of it

JM: lots of oil, add a scoop of coconut oil to your meal, delicious, add more calories, seen people carrying full glass bottle of hot sauce, to spice things up, seen someone carry a glass jar of coconut oil

when for lighter right

went for single use coconut packets, a light way to incorporate into meals, trying to avoid highly processed carbs, I don’t make me feel that great

nuts, sunflower seeds, chia hemp and flax seeds also in my diet

they’re just delicious

TP: sprouting seeds and recycling water?

JM: read about a woman who sprouted just in a tupperware, poked holes, put a piece of cheese cloth, had fresh greens all week

broccolli, peas, lentils, alfalfa, also there was a time where there was a bunch of rain, miners lettuce foraging in oregon, what if I just threw some of that in to my ramen

TP: what level of foraging is legal/desirable, plant ID nerds, not gonna survive 100% but hope they wouldn’t be too restrictive about that kind of stuff

JM: I really can’t say, if we’re allowed to, it’s a protected trail, but in oregon you have to have a permit to forage for wild mushrooms, also, I definitely eat the huckleberries on the trail that were everywhere, just so many

TP: some things are invasive too, its a benefit

JM: thank you these giant berries we’re going into the trail

if I had a little more confidence in local flora and fauna, know for sure you can’t hunt, if it was permissible I’d totally lead a group, let’s get launch, wild mustard, miners lettuce, local invasive plants, didn’t have personal experience foraging, other than the berries

TP: people not yet in romance with nature yet, remember when I didn’t feel a romance with nature, grew up playing in woods, at the beach, wasn’t a deep yearning to connect with something I’d never known, didn’t feel deprived, took it for granted, video games started to eat my childhood, I don’t want to say disenchanted, I can commiserate with the people who feel like they feel more excitement from video games, socializing, hipster strips, when go out to nature I’m bored, cynical earlier in life, then rekindled romance through gardening, seeking healing, would love to have you in your words, help people feel into the shifts and transformation and deep soul tissue healing that’s happening, if you could romanticize the journey

JM: I think just to start it off, if you’re not in love, or find yourself bored, but you’re stressed out, want to work on health, nurture it better, just like to share, some of the research that is, where we are right now with nature immersion is where yoga was, in terms of more mainstream, widespread, growing body of research combined with intuitive understanding, tipping point, health researchers, government, very progressive, bring nature to people’s every day lives, it can lower stress hormone levels, reduce nervous system arousal, enhance immune system function, decrease anxiety, improve mood, help with aggression, accelerate healing

highly stimulated in this world now, if you want to try, give it a chance, big study, 20k people, people who spent 2 hours a week in green spaces, parks, neighborhood with a ton of trees, just hanging out and removing yourself from urban environment, traffic, noise, any kind of natural environment, either all at once or spaced out, like taking 10 minutes on launch break, fresh air, giving self space

attention restoration theory, allows brain to restore, allows cognition, your brain giving it space and time to relax, when you go back to desk or work, cognition levels are much better

little things like that, if you’re not someone who gets super excited, its such an easy thing, give yourself 10 minutes, 2 hours a week spread out, try it

when we make something important, our health, mental health, emotional states, spiritual states, at very least, relax and think, relax and not think, taking time to do that, make it important, have that connection with natural space it will begin to show itself to you

a friend that is not trying to tell you what to do with your life, or unsolicited advice, they’re just there, allow you to work through whatever you’re going through

natural world all of the patterns that exist in that space are things that as humans we’ve evolved with, all very familiar

one quote I really love, from scientist who was a pioneer for forest bathing Japan, “we are visually fluent in the patterns of the natural world, because we evolved in the scenery of the natural world we can process its patterns easily, it is this fluency that relaxes us”

TP: stress less, talk to the nature painting, talk to the landscape

JM: with my own business, researching so much, why isn’t this more popular, why isn’t this more well known

allow attention to restore our brains, to chill out, thinking tests better, in New York, some crazy busy place, even just looking at pictures of nature, videos, listening, put on headphones listen to nature sounds

all of that is beneficial, so it’s like why not

not the most stimulating, in terms of instant gratification, but if you make your health, mental health, emotional state, a priority, 10 minutes a day for you to level up

TP: PSA for gamers, as of just very recently Santa Cruz has joined Oakland, decriminalize entheogenic plants and fungi, the whole suite of plant derived entheogens, still federally highly regulated, but just like cannabis, this movement is growing very fast, #decriminalizenature, I feel like for me what shift was the romance with nature 10xed when I started to integrate dancing in the garden with psychedelics, because all of that dopamine you’d get from slaying dragons in a video game world, you’ll be that thrilled just watching the flow of nature, and being a part of it, and doing your own shadow work, and having nature spirits help you with that

don’t want impose that narrative on our work

JM: hemp will save the world environmentally

TP: what are some of the more cinematic moments

JM: very very beautiful views are conducive of these type of moments, knowing that when you’re looking out on this beautiful landscape, mountain peaks, feel very small, but very connected, look out and see all these pieces of me, subatomic particles, everything is me, and I am it, really grounding type of experience to have, look out, wow all the issues I’m struggling with or limiting factors, or negative head space, all that just dissipates, because you put things into perspective, look into the night sky, see the stars, and you just, sense of awe, and admiration, and deep respect, when you are just so connected, just in tune

TP: I feel that, live for those vistas, any times where equipment failed, or got soaked, freezing, suffer through a night, moments of triumph

JM: I would say nature is cruel but powerful mistress, so like, in the same way that it will guide me into this revelation about absolute awe adoration, at the same time I’ve been cold, and hungry, and so defeated, but I think those are the moments when we’re struggling, going through change, extreme internal conflict due to weather and terrain, you’re able to grow, I have so much respect for nature, those experiences teach you how to tap into your grit, drive is more important than intrinsic motivation, which is fleeting, tap into own tenacity, hardship

when things are gravy at home, stressed out from work or life, but physically when you are drenched, no placed to put your tent, or snow, post holing thigh deep, on side of mountain gotta get off but sun is setting

even just being out there and pushing yourself is honestly the best way to make a transformation, quickest and most impactful way

meditation is very powerful and important, but holy moly I just did that, very immediate evolution when you experience that kind of physical challenge

just think about it, anytime you get pummeled in the ocean, I respect you so much, I will not through trash in you, I’m just a naked human, a flesh bag

TP: break up, death of loved own, quitting smoking or drinking, seems like any kind of major shift or transition even if its just a week, sounds like you’re a great person to be an evangelist for this, and it’s not a pill that you just take and pay big pharma to have you on a pill for the rest of your life, hopefully get off anti-depressants, I can feel that

TP: heart ached when you told me you were in a corporate career, didn’t hear the exhuberance in your voice when you told me about it, glad it served you well for business administration, training for solopreneur, blessings to everyone who thrives in that environment, having known you at the peak of your youthful enthusiasm for exploration and breaking rules and being a rebel, I’m so thrilled to know that everything is coming full circle for you.

I had similar story of it being incongruent with spirit/soul being in a cubicle, but knowing when I was in corporate environment I was mining the experience so I wouldn’t just be a broke ass hippy, I’d know how to take a penny and make two pennies with out
