Permaculture Eco-Warriors Establish The Moshram Part 2 TPP281

Play

In this episode I’m joined by MC Mycopath for a two part series on the past, present, and future of his personal permaculture journey and the establishment of The Moshram

My Non Verbatim Show Notes

MM:

10 years doing landscape consultations, small scale urban repurposing of people’s front and back yards, more hip with local, everything that’s taking place, microbio in soil, plants that co-mingle,

also consulting folks with health

certifications achieved through multiple biochemists

learned that the more fresh foods that we consume, the healthier our cells are

the body that takes us around here

with that, understanding and passion for that, I really wanted to be able to provide highest quality product of food for myself and others, coupled with education

spin farming, brother and I spin farming, didn’t necessarily bring in permaculture

added permaculture principle layer to spin farming

densely growing high value crops in small area

regenerate the living systems

help maintain my living system, at a cellular level, also at a financial and social level

been about 5 years, that I’ve been on this site, had multiple sites over the years

site, least likelihood of it being taken from underneath my feet, all apart of journey

seeing successes and failures in past projects

led me to finding this space

it was through a friend, that was aware that I was looking to scale up

spin farming in brothers back yard, with brother

then when on to slightly expanding at space I was at

really like to bring it all to one location and just do this

generally around vegetable crops

annuals predominantly

put in a layer of perennial crops

also longer term species, fruit trees

learned fascinating things about fruit

fruit tree requires least amount of water over long time period

gives back a lot to soil

soil is really just millions or billions of living organisms

eating pooping, dying, whole things perpetuating

through roots and leaves, branches, fruits, they drop all feeding system

year in year out

bring together this whole concept

put it at a term, silvopasture

rows of fruit trees, or some type of tree

aid in creating shade

aid in slowing down wind

not requiring a lot of water, relative to other annual crops

in between rows, would grow annual crops

maybe these annual crops are things just to regenerate soil

rotational crop, in between lettuce, grow vetch, cow pea, to reinvigorate the soil from what was depleted from what was the previous crop you cultivated

what we set out to do here

very densely packed rows of vegetable crops to sell at market and too individuals through CSA type program

longer term species of varying fruit trees

simply move forward upon goals of project, something that’s always an unknown, fortunately and unfortunately, that collaborative team of 3 individuals broke down

mediator, wasn’t sustainable, they didn’t vibe well, both wanting to walk away which they did

I was not very interested in walking away from another project, having it swept out from under me, again ,because these two egos weren’t collaborating

move post differences

differences got in the way

I wasn’t feeling, stepping away from all of the work we had done from contouring the land, to bringing in so much organic matter, infusing bacterium, all sorts of soil microbiology

perennial fruit trees, you have to wait some time, 3-5 years minimum to reap harvest

I didn’t have it in me to just be like you guys aren’t into, either am I, I am into it

don’t just want to do it here, want to perpetuate this stamp, different biomes

so cal region, mediteranean biome, only about 7 med, climates on the planet, tend to be the most lucrative for humans to co-exist with surroundings, temperatures, food crops, wild and domesticated

love to see what it’s like in other bioregions as well, other climatic elements

we’ve got going on what we have here

you came forward saying how interested you were in helping perpetuate this project, it was like the clouds parted

working on this site, we’re on 10s of acres, just working out a little over an acre, just maintenance alone for one person is daunting to say the least

just because we put together a holistic system doesn’t mean there’s no more work

actually perpetual, no end to amount of work, just in pruning things, cultivating

easy to plant seed, easy to harvest, cultivation in between, I don’t know if it’s gonna survive or not, I’ll do everything I can

lot of energy mental, physical, spiritual

one dude, isn’t gonna hold the world on his back man, either are two

TP: makes me think I’m gonna use another term for defining permaculture and call it ecological parenthood

caring for something to maturity

young families go through it, terrible twos, fighting, health similar thing

tree system here, adolescent,

MM: not as easy as dealing with child, can’t teach a tree how to fight off a squirrel, they’re bullies

TP: the timeliness of this, synchronicities will be unveiled later

rick straussman, first actual government sanctioned psychedelic research studies since the 70s, gap of 20 years

spirit molecule, interviewed,

recently, basically saying, people would ask did he take DMT,

he would give a vague answer or plausible deniability

eventually recently came out, admitted, yeah, I was doing it

I’m like fuck yeah, I wanted to hear that for so many years, scientist had the balls to do what he was talking about

ties back together, something he said, meta level life philosophy

you know, back then I had my whole career ahead of me still, a lot to lose, judged, critique, older, less of my life left, that’s much less life to lose

we’re at a point where I don’t want to piss off the wrong people, I don’t want to be a target, wait til we have resilience before we have grand opening at this site

eventually will ripened, eventually forced by demand, people will need it

sweet spot in time, security measures, support we need, capital, be in place for the time we want to open the gates

get to that point when, we did the thing, not much left to lose, tell the story, give real names, not give a fuck

certain things now, I feel like, at least statute of limitations has run out on some things, one metric

that feeling, we’ll get to a point where we don’t have that much to lose

my side of story of having fallen in love with this site, toured project in the past, wishing I could be more connected, occasion to visit

definitely feel like it was one of the most epic works in progress of so cal permaculture

ability to do it right

social permaculture dynamics of human sector, zones of humans, sector of humans, human elements, could have most beautiful property, dynamics surrounding neighbors be your worst enemy, false starts,

time energy, blood, blisters, heart ache, amount of effort that goes into permaculture project, somebody that’s they’re mission, to have that be continually ripped out in front of you

people don’t even see it

persecution of religious sects, we are the lost tribe of permies, that are constantly being haranged by neighbors

adapted us also to travel light in our personal empires

positive side effect of lifestyle of ecological romance

nudge nature to create symphonies of seed and soil

less hindered

student of Tyler Durgen, waking up after car crash with Edward Norton, the world I see, laying out strips of vennisen

hunter gathers, thriving on the carcass of industrial collapse

utopian anarchoprimitivists, intellectual elite, from eugene, green anarchist, wanna be poser,

not everybody was a poser, the heads that were the elitist, very hyper intellectual, authors and writers, wind bags, had all this talk

in eugene the founder of food not lawns, we’d go there talk bs about living primitive, blessing her with presence of our lofty conversations, decades later we don’t have our food forest, we don’t have fruit trees maturing, resentment, burnt bridges

super extra appreciate hard work that’s been done

this site, work you’ve done, huge grace, a pass, I could and should very well be punished for how far I’ve strayed from the path of planting trees, defending them, standing by them, storms, storming off of partners and lovers, mission and duty to make a stand

there’s a lot of times I’ve said this is not the hill I’m gonna die on, and this is the first time I can actually say this is a high that I would die on, for a lot of reasons, biggest gift to me, is to know

who is tantra punk, wacko jerk off wanna be tyler durgen alter ego, that split off from psychedelic ceremonies that got botched, and now this floating soul part of my old wounded self, has created this internet porn star wanna be freak, don’t have much ecological, I have bastard children trees, all over the place, to be able to be like

while you were out there, doing this thing, that could have got you in trouble, some what of an adventure, fool hardy, never would have expected that I could just cheat that time that I walked away from the permaculture path, did this freaky stuff

hey ben, dinners ready, fruit falling from trees, I just get to get back into the zone, almost 10 years since I was in deep coastal mountain broad acre permaculture, doing the trees, doing the systems right, the scale, the soil

waltz into this at a point you’d be beleagured, bromance novel cover if there ever was one

thanks to the designer of designers, tip had lift glass to him

be great to go into the shark tank part of this, now the reinforcements in the form of me and my humble but growing financial capital I can put in to keep things afloat, elbow grease, sweat equity

optimizing dance of mutuality, with responsibilities, rights, tasks, finances, between the two of us

alchemy we’re doing, the renaissance of this project, bring into 2.0 era

trajectory of , drawing from the permies community, paul wheaton, survival podcast, larry santoyo, different instructors we’ve had

business model for the site, the rebel farmers like sepp holzer, austria, kramaterohoff, epic contour narrow ponds support subtropical microclimates, high elevation fruit trees

so abundant, epic, done epic shit, considered to be the ultimate rock star, don’t think any other place on earth, other mature permculture projects, the profitability and scale and grandeur, I don’t know what I would compare to the kramaterhoff on earth

wonders of the world of permaculture tour, walk through it sometime

business model, everything else in agriculture sector, globalized race to the bottom, poison, toxic

convince people to want to buy american, niche for premium products, usually sick people who can afford to take your advice

don’t want to give crutch of supplying, want to teach them to do it themselves, leverage their acreage, their community

the idea of farming to enable other people to not be horticulturalists, shift from that as soon as possible

paradigm, living the dream, market gardeners, the biproduct of creating plenty of best varieties of food we’d like to eat, we’ll have excess, and with that excess we can play god to an extent in the economy because of how much of ecological ninjas we are

rather than try to package it all in plastic, get it in all the stores, scale it to the world

we make a more dense local economy out of it, healing center, learning center, teaching them how to fish, not selling them a fish per se

in my crude nut shell of a pitch, that’s the trajectory we’ve been most in agreement about

if somebody had infinite budget to invest, why should they buy into this as working co-op member, or non-working co-op member, how can people benefit from helping us

MM: few dudely dudes, I’ve met could really have no care to well being of nature around them, small minority of people I’ve spoken with of time on this path, over 20 years

experience with biodiesel co-op, very localized project, I would do education to engineering firms, groups

education at earth day festivals, people contribue, become non-working members of biodiesel co-op because they like what’s going on, think it’s a good direction

if anybody has capital, monetary, social, spiritual, any of the 8 forms of capital, that they are willing to share to perpetuate, the direction of this project

this may sound overzealous, I couldn’t think of a better project, or more dedicated individuals to invest that capital in

it’s one of those put your money where your mouth is

my clients in landscaping and in the health regeneration, many of them, actually buy into what I have to share, because of how I’m living my life

I’m not just using words, I’m hands in the soil, I’m doing everything I can at every corner

from what I know of you, been a crucial part of so many projects, that at one point or another it wasn’t your jive anymore for whatever reason

here we are find ourselves together on a mountain we’re will to die on

and it takes a community always

for anyone that would like to be a part of this community and see it perpetuate

be able to visit the site

local,

to benefit from the harvests of all of this, where else are you gonna put your money, time, energy, love

I’m not sure

it’s like you said man, this is one of the rare sites of southern california, any and all help, helps perpetuate a holistic project, working towards the great good of the local and world community when it comes down to it

held a lot of retreats, get people from all over the world, host in tropics, pretty good centralized area, highly abundance

ripe things to eat, throughout the year

amount of people that congregate, so diverse, so incredible, have a lot to share

at this point we have a site that any and all people interested have the ability to share

before it’s all been other people’s sites, very temporary, the time that gets spent there

long term expanded version of those experiences, and “retreats”

where else are you gonna put your resources, if you want to see great things happen, cause that’s all we’re really into

passionate

tend to only roll with those who are equally passionate about making this place a better place to be

agenda 21,

different concept of human settlement zones, from what we’re working towards here

TP: yes

to say the most and the least, that says it all, what could I add to that

nuts and bolts of this business modeling, goes back to legacy of my parents at some point will read the manifesto my father wrote for member based, for-profit nonprofit, fruit based operation, deep in heart of washington state apple orchard lands, building a massively, dense, intensive educational commercial project, rusticness, design constraint, make all tools, tools to make tools, melting down old cars, human powered, they were one of the first and most highly respected, wasn’t hippie commune, very studious, technical, published technical manual, subscribers to periodical, whether they purchased wares or we students, subscribe to catalog, kind of like micro version of mother earth news

department of making you said, interviewed mom, years ago, maybe now the time, one of those things you never know when it’s appropriate, get people on podcast, get perspectives, state of world, might be our last conversation, could go for anybody, did great interview with mom about 10 years ago, transapocalyptic, utopian for her, fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree

hard dharma, karmic seeds of melt down of family, trauma, wasted years, trouble, lot of years to get on the course that fell apart

a lot of people, children of the hippies

there’s something magical about the fact that here we are kind of at the age our parents were, as a generation, hippie, back to the land 2.0, we had woodstock, the rainbow gathering spawned from that, what are children of hippie’s doing now, actually fulfilling some of those dreams

we have now psychedelic shamanism, and not just acid, the electric kool aid test, these people went back to the land, no shamanic oversight, no elders,

even Geoff Lawton jokes, sad joke, comic tragedy, I wonder how many communes failed because they didn’t understand proper solar orientation, they bought land on north facing slopes, gave themselves an uphill battle on steep slopes facing the shadow of the sun, don’t even know why they melted down

permaculture,

we can learn from a lot of those mistakes, well positioned to demonstrate, and proudly display the next generation of the back to the land movement again at a time my mother talked about in the podcast

people went back to the land at the peak of the OPEC oil crisis in early 1970s

it wasn’t 1969 and summer of love, melt down of haight ashbury into tweaker rape culture madness,

they didn’t go directly from peak of 60s to back to the land, survivalist, apocalyptic thing, cities going to evaporate and collapse, economy gonna collapse, have to head to hills and start building a future

but brought in patriarchy, monoculture, only little bits of eastern mysticism

wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that

now, okay, this is for me the most pure and karmically cleansed and most righteous set of circumstances to do your thing

are you really these eco artisans the whole world should pay attention to, or destined to fail

may not be the last place I ever work on

do world tour of biomes

if you take permaculture design course you want to be like a army ranger, navy seal, eco macguevery, swiss army knife, want to be deployed in every climate

because you know how to do things like harvest snow melt for nursery underground

be a bad ass shit, being a bad ass eco warrior with all this knowledge

do what special forces and green berets, what if all the engineering and money and investing and capital, everything that went into napalm and agent orange, if instead of destroying ecology, all that cultural engineering of warfare, went into actually creating a more resilient opposition through permaculture

tactical permaculture, make it impossible for them to put land mines in territory you want to defend, created thorny trellising, motes, father in military

being a bad ass, be tactical, have a reason to train, not mma, good for them but

wanna have something I love that’s worthy of defending that would keep me in shape just by working it, origins of kung fu and farming

bit of a tirade from me

MM:

I really like how you brought up that the fruit does not fall far from the tree, parents

definitely feel, that’s a thing that goes on in nature, we’re a part of it

we’re carbon copies of these people we call our parents

we emulate them in so many ways, because of the signature for which they gave us, dna

as father was one of most brilliant men I’ve ever met in my life

I would come forward to father with things I’ve learned, he would share how could he thought it was, what it made him think about

prior too, a little apprehensive, most brilliant man, hey check this out, not knowing what kind of feedback, always positive re-enforcement

honoring that we can do as individuals in relationship to our ancestors, that can be very important for mental scape, how we conductor ourselves in our lives

bro, sounds like a spitting image of your dna tree

I would imagine your mother and father had some similar thing for them

fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree

TP: I should shout out thank you to your father, have to name the library after him

lots of bro time to catch up on, and create that space where we can, aya ceremonies, 2 or 3 generations in one ceremony of family members, pretty epic

we’re healing ourselves, healing each other, healing the masculine, and creating a safe and welcoming space for the feminine to be free to be fully expressed

said before no offense, I kinda feel like, well it goes back to waynes world, fully functional babe layer, you can design for the woman in you, and the woman you want on you, save 9th form of capital for another episode

not a monastery, not womanizers either, between monastery and rapey womanizer cult, we’re probably somewhere in the middle

we need our other ethical brothers to step up, we have some healing to do in our tribe of permaculture, takes a lot of those talks about our fathers and what they did and didn’t teach us

so, that conversation is an open forum, its fun to shoot guns and practice your kicks and punches, equally important to break down and let yourself be, pummelled and tenderized by letting go of trauma, letting brother hood energy find those deep wounds and fractures, more energy buried we could be apply to our tree parenthood, soil parenthood, aquaculture parenthood, seed parenthood

MM:

along those lines of the multigenerations of lineage through psychedelic experience, its always bewildered me, with my psychedelic experiences with mushrooms, everytime I sense my grandfather,at first really weird thing, now a presence I’m aware of, hear and feel mutterings, only knew for short period of my life

at this point it’s very interesting, grandfather said, you’re back, maybe I’m back, it’s nice to be with you

thanks for helping to perpetuate my father,

what can I do for us

great thing

TP: it’s like working for a company, at office chair, every once in a while the owner comes in, the day the owner comes in, checking it out, what’s your name, trippy, ancestor worship is a thing

use it or lose it

I feel in this life, pretty damn abandoned by ancestors, been torn asunder to depths of hell such that ancestors have been blocked off by dark armies of hell, demons, but we’re gonna compost the shit out of them, find that the spirit guides were always there, they were just blocked, we didn’t make it easy for them to get back to us

of all the times I’ve felt I don’t know if I belong here, don’t know what I should be doing here, try to destroy ego, never lasts, very few times and place where I feel there is pure righteousness

liberate this land from all the plastic, multigenerational journey

dance with past and future, toxic gick, pure nature, spirits definitely guiding us

applauding efforts, works cut out for you, each one teach one, clean it up, scale it out

microcosm of what has to be done for the whole planet, on every planet

MM: not controlled by forces that think they’re higher

TP: decentralized, mycopathic, path of mycology

talk about martial arts, personal development, brother hood, men’s group experience that we’re working on and developing synthesis of spiritual, self defense, fitness through working the land, grace of being connected to your yin, notion of not just another wet noodle retreat center, traipsing around in loosest clothing, look at me I look like I just jumped out of a Rambo set, and yet I’m spiritual, dancing, smelling flowers, appreciating all the rainbows, but I can also do some ninja rolls, lift some heavy shit, drag some shit around, and do what’s gotta be done, ideal of a shaolin temple, double dragon fruit

playing up this idea, thinking about, if I was a kid, in the peak of my GI Joe fan boyness I would love to be shooting airsoft guns, tactical training with seed shot pellets, was nature boy, played in nature

how much fun families can be having, applying energy going into videos or going into being a boxer, mma fighter

masculine energy, protection, defense, epic garden project, for masculine energy to balance itself and exhaust itself, place for healthy catharsis, healthy relationships, families, we can both speak to

will be legacy to leave behind, a martial, permaculture, ecological, new martial culture as well, no surprise, or coincidence that we both, been blessed by profound journey’s into what other brutish me respect, not just purple breathers, also to some degree bad asses

love to hear you talk about, the spirit of the dragon fruit that animates you and your kung fu gardening techniques

MM:

made reference to that hippie thing, an elder at one of the rainbow gatherings I was sitting with , great acronym, term hippie, happy intelligent person, pursuing infinite excellence

never my thinking when it came to hippies, people that smelled bad, sat around got high and kept sitting around

just talking isn’t accomplishing,

pursuing infinite excellence, taking it to another level, punk rock perspective

you are a hippie, you smell like scum, I’m your worst enemy, a middle class street punk

and I always resonated with that, really nice to get that different perspective of what hippie could be

greater mobility in body, sought out chi gong master, chinese yoga for lack of better terms

not just stretching

entire philosophy, after about a year of training, sifu said, training is great, very yin, balance out with kung fu, more yang,

open to this, cool

always wanted, wanted to have military training for various reasons it wasn’t something that happened, along same line of hippie

kung fu, nearly synonymous, life mastery

mastering whatever life is for me, to me

level of giving back that comes from all of that

began training kung fu

4-5 days a week sometimes 2 sessions a day, my body started to really get in tune with motions, weapons training, when we think back to the shaolin, where kung fu started

these were farmers, weapons were their farm tools, really started to come through as my body got accustomed to movements, started using these implements in the farm, body now knew how to use them in a more appropriate way

ergonomics

rake or hoe, swing it out with arms, shoulders, and back, or put it out there and move hips back and forth, all power in your hips

spirals up through feet, hips, outward

utilizing that technique with farm tools

new relationship with tools and how to work with land and my body, all in same go

weeding, clearing debris, chopping things down, practicing kung fu

martial arts/life mastery

mastering far more of my body, tools, and tools that work with land

symbiosis, something that we can all benefit to apply in our lives, in any way shape or form

not everybody’s gonna go be a farmer

maybe you’re pushing a vacuum

you can cause strain or you can no cause strain to body, which then causes strain or not on the body, perpetuates through spirit

something that I’m still evolving into I feel like but its very empowering

self reliance

being able to provide for yourself, doesn’t just mean growing food, having land, also means self defense

never know where you’re gonna find yourself

bring those things into all of those life practices, another science that fills one of those holes in that permaculture raft we get pushed out into the water

brings it all back around, self feeding, self perpetuating

mentally physically and spiritually

TP:

brings us full circle

pleasant meanderings, through path of this convo, summary of most of our various contexts, working or grubbin on fruit, whatever it is, comings and goings, as we’ve been carving out this niche for ourselves

always reminds me of the movie that got me first enchanted with martial arts, van damme, blood sport

here we are, tactical permaculture moment going back to deepest roots of romance with nature and martial arts

ninjitsu master, frank dux, he was talking to parents, european parents of young frank dux, depicted to be wine farmers, vineyard, meeting of parents

train with japanese ninjitsu master

frank told me you grow vines, boys like vines need training, martial science brings mind, body, spirit together

we’re fulfilling that prophesy

we’re dudes,

point about military, I mentioned this not too long ago, in jest, valid point

hey america, if you would have given me a real war, or real cause to fight for, I would have served on the front lines, it’s been nothing but bullshit, you don’t get to have this body/mind

don’t give traumatic brain injury, lead poisoning, blow my limbs off, make me unable to sustain a relationship, cut my VA benefits for using cannabis

you don’t get any of that shit, not in this lifetime, maybe that could change, who knows what battles will need to be fought

the joke I made, we’re not we’re not less of bad asses that we didn’t get military training, we’re actually more, if we can be, without having the training of those instructors, and we can train our damn selves, read same manuals, same marksmanship, survival training, mindset of discipline, selection

break you down

I was my own drill segerant, life circumstances carved my ass from cookie dough to wood

health, wellness, survival, comes from putting skin in the game

better to have warrior in garden than gardener in war,

debilitating malformed meme of utopian pacifism

idea that we all need to be genderless, a mush of micro trauma egg shell walking, I’m a man, I embrace that, I don’t need impose, I embrace and love and support cherish diversity, space for everyone

phrase, vin armani brought to attention:

seed conversations of what I’d like to call and have been implementing

permaculture training experience for tactically minded, some of the best training, with hardcore lesbian women, guns and ammo, blades, bows and arrows plaster their walls instead of boy band posters, those are my best friends

ongoing thing that, I want to be the guy that the butch warrior lesbians like to play with on a full moon when they feel like, interesting romance, another story

have to cover my ass and say it’s not hyper masculine, toxic masculine militia

who wants to be securing the perimeter, that’s what we need first, can’t have whole tribe or family unless we can defend them

call to action, strong willed, strong minded, disciplined, people who want to be bangin sticks as they say in pekiti tirsia kali training, continual life long conditioning and training, being a warrior , really mean something for good cause

quote: michael hopf, those who remain,

hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times,

put that in your pipe and smoke it

enough from me

over and out, roger

thank you again

MM: honor brother, insightful, exciting having this conversation, whoever you are out there listening, hope you were able to glean something from it

summary, I feel like, initially I’d stated how going back to permaculture, can be applied to anything that you do, require taking a permaculture design course with instructor you’d like to learn from, and personality types are thing

I have studied a lot of things in my short time here, does always come back to the principles of permaculture

when I educate others on health, they don’t know it but they’re getting a quick permaculture design course for the body

utilizing all these principles around the landscape we call our bodies

a bunch of cells living together

body, gardening cells, out there gardening soil conditions to provide foods for our cells to utilize

its one of the most valuable trainings that I’ve ever had in my life,

people that also take these course, share similar sentiment

that’s about it

end this with as mc mycopath

end a lot of health lectures with a rap, haven’t done this one in a while, see how it goes

TP: gotta get that out in the drum circle, put some beats on that, hippie drum beats on that

more to come

this conversation is to be continued, next, while we’re still tying up lose ends, give audio tour of integrated systems and logic of design of systems, address

situational report, what we’ve got going what we need help with, if people have time or resources or expertise, what’s been established what’s being established, hearing a bit about what we’re processing, actual road map of what we’re doing, laid out the backstory

of what could be an epic opportunity for ourselves

all sliding scales of wealth, we’re providing

free offerings online, all kinds of content, you’ll be whippin up a podcast, holding the camera for each other to do a lot of the teaching we want to

following up with some a/v content

be comin at cha again soon

big love to you and to all the forces seen and unseen that made it possible to be at this point

life moments, purchasing first house, getting married, 23-24 years old, decision, job that I had wasn’t inline with goals, 7 years into career, that going in all right places, decided wasn’t what signed up for, gave notice

started searching for business for sale

collection of adult website for sale, active in commerce, bought pay sites, started journey down path

first few years, bought websites that had revenue, 10-12k a month in rev, didn’t know when started, awful lot, didn’t know due diligence, didn’t know person selling was defrauding me, rocky start, management to make the best of it

sites were, all stolen content, fraud recurrering credit card database, deleted everything, rebuilding different niche sites with licensed content, starting all over again, before starting hosting company

established pay site program, for a few years also had phone sex marketing company, early on as site owner, trying to figure out what else I could promote

didn’t trust concept of affiliate programs, traffic was organic from search engines

got niche specific toll free premium rate entertainment lines

first conference may of 2000, on mission trying to find company there to do fulfillment

back then, searching on internet, weren’t marketers there

always been technically inclined, bought service, put in data center,

made friends in industry

started to re-sell some hosting to offset and lower bills

april of 2002, when I officially went into hosting business, running phone affiliate program,

current business partner today, upon his suggestion, started partnership, he was CTO managing all things technical, I was managing finances, sales, operations, been a long time since then

today over 1000 clients all over the world

1500 servers, 2 different data centers

several dozen employees doing technical support

quite a journey, watching all the tech, working with so many companies

the 1000 I host today represent more than 3000 individuals and companies I’ve worked with since we started

TP: blessings to you for taking on these opportunities and challenges, a lot of learning curves

BM: for sure, never really learned anything the easy way

remember having talks at trade shows, people arguing about giving away 15 second free video clips, around those years, people started to publish video on the internet, bandwidth used to be super expensive,, content was behind a paywall

typically a life cycle of 4-6 years, for someone’s business

so many amazing entrepreneurs, very few ideas and implementations you can create once and just sort of last forever

have to continue reinventing selves and products

catchphrase, that’s good mojo

corporate mantra, from sales to technical support

always in support of customers

give as much info as possible

as much as can, try to empower customers, with all the tools they need

much rather have creative entrepreneurs finding a home here that people with stagnant businesses

95% customers in adult entertainment or advertising space

busy in this space

1-2 years, making efforts, adding staff, augment marking, expand reach

amazing set of technical products, haven’t been reaching fullest audience

TP: appreciate longevity of your operation, definitely hanging in there, flash backs of those chokepoints in bottlenecks in bandwidth and streaming

survived different waves of politics/tech

difference between adult friendly and unfriendly web hosting services

pitch for why people need to do it right the first time, start with adult friendly tech stack for content

BM: my experience, as always a lot of preconceived notions

most basic level, being on internet, even buying a domain, they think godaddy

even when it comes to starting at very beginning, most registrars, have something that looks like a bundled plan,

hosting package, maybe includes domain, show low domain price, 9.99, details fine print, intro price, renews at price higher on year two

we’ve done, convenience for client base everyday low price on domains, include privacy services

.com, always 9.99 no higher, no upcharge for privacy, offer as convenience

for average person, challenging to pick a good web host, if not what experience is grounded in

10s of 1000s website selling hosting, most are resellers, reselling hosting services from other organizations

one or several servers in a data center, don’t own servers don’t own network, don’t own ip space, aren’t negotiating bandwidth, their providing tech support, renting server from hosting company

always gonna be a cheaper price for webhosting, paying for what you get

smaller companies, maybe a great match, get lucky, super attentive admin

wake up in middle of the night, respond timely, handle tickets quickly

don’t have economy of scale for support

when we started, literally, if in middle of night server went down, he’d have to get woken up to fix server

extreme example on small end of webhosting, dont think it’s good place to host with

dont’ have depth of experience, or buying power to assemble a good product

mojo host, servers in 2 continents, separate company in netherlands

1,500 servers online

one of things differentiates us the most

going from one end of spectrum, small web host, selling management on top of renting a real hosting company

opposite would be going with something like go daddy, huge company

challenge with opposite end, is that they have many many tiers of technical support experience, pick up phone, call, medium or complex question, get someone at first tier of tech support, navigate through technical bureaucracy, to get right advice

mojo host 25 senior sys admins, 5-15 years experience

spend several months teaching more, how to do things our way, we can be accountable to expectations/outcomes for customers

few hundred very large webhosting companies, I’m on small end of spectrum, we’re on of them based on traffic, client count, server count,

most of larger companies not selling high touch customer service product, they are trying to move quantities of servers, selling just based on price point, buying hosting can be really confusing

misleading

analogy, ever had unlimited cellular plan, only to find out its not unlimited?

Rate limiting/throttling, no body wants that

definitely don’t want that on a server

revenue tracks with customer experience

difference in cost, less than what you think

can explain how hosts buy bandwidth, how they do their internet routing,

we assemble best networking, best support team, hardware nerd

goal, to deliver everyday good price for great product, with support that’s amazing

proud of it

our tech support, not allowed to say no, work till blue in the face to help

programming advice, feedback on bad scripting, mindful of security considerations

manage to client success

independent creative thinker, problem solver

TP: more and more sold, a lot of my pain points are being nudged on a bit

realizing more and more, I probably have been shooting myself in the foot

BM: don’t beat yourself up too much

I see it a lot when people are buying

takes a connection, good conversation, have it explained to you

a buyer of hosting, always okay to ask why, always an explanation

there’s an answer for everything

truth of it is, on tech support, wage scales are very high for top notch, technical talent

staff used to cost me 30-45k a year 10 to 12 years ago, now in north america,

65-over 100k a year with full benefit package,

tech support may take an hour to solve your problem, complex trouble shooting

if you’re buying a plan that’s 10 or 20 or 50 or 99$ a month, there’s a real clock that’s ticking on the other endof the phone,

support difference, it would be very easy to try to layer that with less qualified tech support to average those costs down

I’ve had such a crack sys admin team

team is global

guys in us, michigan where headquarters, florida, maine, wisconsin

office in ukrain, 18 sys admins

2 in phillipenes

high standard for who your hiring, english skills, good team fit?

Fit for company culture, integrity, work ethic, creativity, attitude, positive attitude, make for great employees

physically living doesn’t matter so much

super high quality staff

don’t hire any candidates

TP: if I’m dealing with any service provider who’s not on board with adult industry, tip towing, egg shell walking, shy, enter what’s your domain, on support ticket, I cringe, will they be biased

BM: you never know,

personal views might affect outcome of what your trying to accomplish, that’s one risk factor, the other

big companies, broad sweeping policy changes that affect everybody

canadian web hosting company, didn’t want to host any more adult website, never got to speak with any principles of that entity, don’t know what rationale was, led to them having many customers that needed to find a new home

found us, seamlessly get those people moved over

helped them all win

more servers, more bandwidth, better or lower price

that’s the risk you run with medium size companies that think to have policies

with larger entities, even more complex risk factor,

example: abuse complaints can be a very wide spectrum of opinion, there’s the laws that exist, very real, all abide by those, when it comes to email or content related, obscenity, start getting into areas some of which well defined, others very subjective

when a client is sitting at a very very large web host, dozens or 100s of people in abuse department, handing broad spectrum they’re not invested in understanding what’s going on, what they’re looking at, maybe they don’t have to care… that right decisions being made, right actions being taken

we’ve got silverstein as attorney, see eye to eye on all of those issues

protect customers so they can feel safe if they’re doing good honest business

at same time, I do everything in my power that people doing bad things on the internet don’t have any safe places to hide, can’t do it on my network

another benefits to being at a host that’s so engaged with whats right/wrong legally and dare say morally, I’m able to keep whole flock of customers safer by making really smart decisions about what we will and wont’ allow on our network

mega hosts, often the victim of neighborhood that they’re in

making sales, everything a sign up page, not really conversation with customers

not interested …some fly by night spam nonsense, things that are deceitful can create bad internet network neighborhood

more often victim of ddos

beautiful things at mojohost, network, filled with good neighbors, makes everyone’s stuff safer, not looking to add every possible sale to mojohost, only seeking good customers

any indications that someone’s doing something fraudulent/illegal, happy to get them off our network, helps protect …other servers, protects IP reputation

TP: again all these flashbacks, being hacked by some vuln on some other shared host, not maintaining

you get what you pay for

you don’t get what you don’t pay for

BM: in order to keep my staff effective, don’t sell shared hosting, we do sell them to people, mostly friends and family, anyone we’ve known or met can talk to us, if don’t have a plan at your price point we’ll create one for you, good people doing good things on internet

shared hosting is massively over subscribed, dozens to hundreds of customers, hundreds to 1000s of domains and put on single server, problem is working under same installation of operating system, all same memory, ram, disk resources, hard to give somebody guarantee on quality of service at that price point

say you have wordpress site, one domain, hundred other people wordpress site on own domains, inexperienced, start adding things to wordpress, no consideration, exploits that theme or mod, when last update, how secured,

shared hosting, someone got rooted on the box, affects everybody’s websites

sharing ip addresses, now goofed for everybody

im not able to serve all of the masses, but that’s not the goal of the business

if you want a more predictable, more reliable, higher performance, more deeply supported experience you’re gonna have to pay a bit more, not necessarily a lot more, but a little bit more

10 a month to 50 a month, what are you getting what are you paying

company like mine, committed to industry, really resourceful

open line of communication, jack, keith, natalie, to our attorney,

if someone’s smart, tap relationships right, being in the club gets you access to everybody

travel the world, 10-12 adult conferences a year, meeting people all over the place sometimes that means, if you had a problem with say your paxum account, maybe I can connect you with someone to help you get it fixed

good mojo, I know such and such, see if I can help you get this squared away, other business value feel like we can add, for customers and friends

always happy to help whenever possible

TP: definitely stoked on that way of approaching it, I’ve felt very alone, naked and afraid, on the internet, I would say to be honest at this point, the threshold I’ve arrived at personally, I’ve been sort of in a bit of an incubator, experimenting, see if can find niche, find traction, it is what is, been what’s it’s been, now would be able to justify premium, more robust

can’t justify liability, not having team behind me

it wouldn’t be one of those 3 letter agencies to be the first ones to tell me I’m doing something wrong, it would be you and corey and everybody else, have all the security on your end correct, things you’d never know in your blindspot, never ending attacks

advanced round

what I’m desperately looking for now, cyber security, info sec, data breach, listening to podcasts

hole in most hosting service providers, some of them them allow multifactor authentication on cpanel, most don’t looking for ones that do, in today’s world, have shared secrets on server, evil made, insider, issue, public key, shell, mfa,

could you give me the elevator pitch on how the admin dashboard, cpanel, ect. Even ftp/ssh access, how can people have the most bulletproof secure access and management experience

BM:

blow your mind, hate selling people cpanel, recommend against it every chance we get

you’ve got managed hosting here’s your cpanel, have at it, doesn’t sound very managed, self servicing, hoping you don’t fuck things up

on top of it, baked into your costs, cpanel licensing fees, cpanel bought by larger entity, licensing very different, what does it mean to you

changed all licensing and royalty amounts

increased prices to consumer

some instances double or triple the fees

change in raw costs on licensing

cpanel has a great product, some alternatives, mostly at mojo, very different, no control panel, my staffs doing the work, you want to ad 5 domains, you put in a support ticket, tell us what the domains are, alright guys go in and add all the domains, we set up all the firewalls, add all email accounts. Like a consierge service

TP: feel like infinite attack surface anytime I log in

BM: …from tech perspective, staffed up with such qualified sys admins, more granular, directly command line, write on scripts to manage server, automate things on the back end, not like my guys going into control panel, copying and pasting into script, lots of things in backend, more efficient, more accurate, customize for betterment of client

when you order hosting for pretty much any other “regular host” getting default install, no tweaking anywhere, not database, …

we believe, best practices all of these different very specific areas, security, performance

might be paying a little more with us to have personal support, senior level sys admin, don’t have to know how to do the work, don’t have to know how to solve the problems, we’ll fix it, explain what happened, explained what options are, removed learning curve,

not just default, taylored to support your needs for some part of your runway

experts at helping people grow your business

we’ve got all that experience

you could start with small vps, dare I say shared hosting account, specialists at highly complex set ups

we help guide our customers into those solutions

we have the way we want to do things…do these complex set ups, end up writing wikis for each client

TP: definitely just blew my mind, dream come true, never would have thought that far out of the box, foot bound by all my experienced about 20 years, web master, designer, always renting, bouncing from one nightmare meltdown to another

BM: gap from when where you’re buying before and where you could be buying may be 10s of dollars

…we’ll do the whole move for you, we’ll move em you test tem

TP: want to get into some weeds with some of your tech guys, gonna make the commitment to make the migration as soon as possible, mind has been blown

the thing that is the deal breaker that sounds like you’re able to soothe my stress around these deal breakers

BM: satisfaction guarantee

I want your complete satisfaction

we’re all human, mistakes do get made, work for a client, work hard for them

with us, we are always going the extra step

mistakes are made, happens some times, important to us that we own it, responsibility, apology, real explanation

very subjective from there on out

get very few requests for invoice credits

my hope is we’re always having a conversation

corrective measures so doesn’t happen in future

things come up, issue at next staff meeting,

something really bad does happen, wanting to overcompensate, can’t insure somebody’s whole business….do best we can

TP: what I could hope for is something almost unimaginable in other paradigms, what I’ve always wanted to do is actually have the engineers behind the delivery of my content, have the master plan of threat model, growth trajectory, proactive about hedging risk, move slowly, absorb surprise scaling, client-consultant relationship, within reason is bundled within hosting plan, wiki for client, that’s the level of now we’re talking high level , intimate codevelopment of a brand

BM: even if you did find another good host, give attention, whole experience breaks down at initial sales process, sales person…

cool thing about mojohost, we all work together when needed, depending on clients needs, not managing to monthly bonus, no trickery, not trying to upsell, scaled business without that, doesn’t work to my benefit in some ways, long term establishes rapport with customers, trust them with business

very consistent experience

if you’re business changes on the fly, get some crazy social media, something goes viral, we figure out all that billing shit afterwards, if it’s an event already happening, happening now, post mortem, we can figure, this is maybe how we need to change your plan, resources

very fluid, if you’re going down or up….

Make changes retroactively, bigger, smaller, which ever direction it needs to go

TP: great general overview, I’m sold, I’m moving forward, honestly having corey on your team is all it took, wonderful vibe from you

my biggest wet dream is to have sophisticated penetration testing/red teaming, sure you have access to the kind of people who would be trust worthy in that department, hesitant to go shopping for pen testers not knowing if they’re just gonna have a good old time, joy riding my site backwards and forwards, installing back doors, a lot of trust in that kind of stuff

BM: we take a very interesting approach, within your desire to do that, experiences in the past, fears of the future, best place to take that conversation, could happen in support ticket, we could talk through and explain over the phone, Vps, any of the guys on our staff, really nerds, love what they do, understand your business, what the risks are

when we install on server, not default install, its a mojo installation, no ssh or ftp access unless ip is white listed

part of list of best practices on how we want to deploy service, I’m warrantying your whole service on my network and hosting company

sometimes might mean you may ask for something and we say no, always a reason for it, always based on experience, doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to accomplish what the clients want to do

happy to help any way we can

TP: gives me chills, want to not have a million options that open me up to all kinds of fuckery, want a very hardened experience

have people with more experience watching over it, being that war room

BM: first thing you truly want to look at , what’s all the software you’re running on your server

battle tested software solutions in adult space, serve us very well, maybe ongoing cost …some upfront fee, but you’re buying something that’s been installed on 1000s of sites, storage cloud, cdn, turn key

a lot of security stuff comes down to good software choice and bad software choices

hard way seems like easy way…cheap plugins

different trade offs

we can help clients, guide into make right choice for business at right point in time

I boot strapped my business, understand what it’s like

have to remember, trying to build an environment for self, predictability, scalability, safety, follow path others have gone before you, its a good way to go, expert level experience

software that’s been battle tested

10s of millions, 100s of millions of vistors a day

bad programming makes for bad hosting

always gonna be working hard to compensate for bad programming

people miss point of that

don’t see how much extra its costing them to use something they could have paid a little more upfront for that’s gonna work better

TP: pay the farmer or pay the doctor, ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure, how much does it cost for the average data breach settlement, pay upfront for more hardening, security,

BM: appreciate being on podcast

TP: can’t get enough

BM: mojohost.com, international, mojohost.eu, two separate portals

have conversation with us

sales@mojohost.com, copies whole team, someones always working or watching their email

skype call or zoom call, want to learn more about your business, experience in the past

use all of our experience to make the best solution that meets your budget and your technical requirements

make your hosting free while you’re doing a move

concerned about quality job, customers number 1 over here

affiliate program pays really well

can set people up as an affiliate, referral, code, 8% residual, very personable here

TP: xbiz show, andaz hotel, rooftap rager, mojohost, silverstein legal party, had that good time, coming full circle, can’t thank you enough, corey enough, look forward to next steps, having you on again soon

Jake Mitchell with Cannabis Plants

Psychedelic Shamanism for Paramedics and First Responders with Jake Mitchell TPP274

Play

In this episode I’m joined by Jake Mitchell for an interview and discussion all about the intersections of psychedelics, paramedics, first responders, mental health, addiction, harm reduction, and the future of legalized psychedelic shamanism

About Jake:

Jake is currently working at supervised injection sites in Toronto performing overdose response, counselling, and harm reduction work; while teaching Basic Life Support skills, Mental Health First Aid, and various addiction/mental health workshops. He combines his experience in emergency medicine with his addictions and mental health training to work on the frontlines of the opioid crisis.

He has built his clinical experience as a Primary Care Paramedic in Emergency Medical Services, with research appraisal and mental health crisis expertise. Medical cannabis helped him overcome depression and greatly limit accumulated post-traumatic stress from his wide range of intense experiences through his career. He now helps other first responders and healthcare workers learn how to benefit from cannabis and psychedelic therapies when appropriate. This promoted him to establish the Psychedelic Society of First Responders and Emergency Workers as a peer support network and information hub. His podcast, Flight Of Thoughts, allows him to share what he has learned and talk with diverse guests about a range of surreal topics.

Jake has several years of clinical experience assisting critically ill or injured persons with Basic Life Support, exercising the Primary Care Paramedic scope of practice. This and his growing experience in social service work has allowed him to form an open-minded and empathetic, trauma-informed approach to caring for patients or clients.

My Non Verbatim Show Notes:

Jake Mitchell, flight of thoughts podcast,

paramedic, additions and mental health as harm reduction worker

4 years, burn out from depression

physical symptoms, not always emotional

prescribed cannabis, 2 years in career, front lines first responders

prevent ptsd

difficulty emotional processing, no issues so far, worried about later in career

colleagues, accumulating ptsd

most don’t feel it right away, yes stress reaction

some people feel recovered, brain has defense mechanisms, months, years later, triggers

try out cannabis, learn to use it properly

folllowed doctors advice, did research, found strains

not to use at work, didn’t understand cbd, not being impaired

used to sleep and relax in days off

good for working out, fight depression

push through, wasn’t just a crutch, other self care rituals first

way to lift up when need

as opposed to revert

going through field, very lucky

went through a lot of intense calls experiences

got curious, not afraid, able to find collective of paramedics and nurses, use them to heal

went to music festival, first response, harm reduction, too much acid, or negative experience, be there to help them, render medical care

psilocybin, psychedelic of choice, highly therapeutic

research on that, on website

evidence based research appraiser, cutting into somebody’s throat who’s chocking, go through articles, feedback, try different measures

look into psychedelics, make sure I didn’t miss anything, others reports, mentors

with great respect, sat down with friends go through powerful experience

what happened was, as a student, bothered me, things would get stressful, would get feeling in chest of anxiety, sex problems people have that quite often, struggle with performance, correlation with professional performance, almost libido there, sometimes feel you can take on any situation,

felt incapable, didn’t see confidence, a lot was depression, realized through therapy

certain mentors, fear and inadequacy come out in people who represent them

catastrophe thinking, comes up with people with depression and anxiety

if you do suffer, not to throw diagnoses, many mental health problems cross over

brain survival mechanism,

studied more training lab, asked more questions

anxiety, helped me become better paramedic

rushes of cortisol, sleep problems worsening depression in long run

psychedelics brought up feelings allowed me to work through them

sounds of alerts

paramedics at a base, lie down on couch have a little rest, nap if no calls coming in

kundalini energy rise, validated experience in selves and others

felt many times in stressful times, flow state, kundalini, can happen organically as well, in body and mind

tones brought right into memory, call of very severe overdose, very late into student time about to finish

tendency to look at things as the negative, I’m inadequate people don’t trust me, peer support that would help

psychedelics can be used to train first responders, mild doses sub thresholds, more of a flow state, not as vivid

induce flow state, help learn new skills a lot quicker, memorization, memory recall, patterns hold back from learning

addictions and mental health diploma, how use to train

introduce mild dose of psychedelic, bring kundalini activation, flow state, recall ability

high doses can train first responders in how to let go, feel sense of chaos, lots of control

extremely intense emergency situations, didn’t feel hopeless, impending doom, text book symptom for heart attacks

panic attack, I’m gonna die, first responder, my patient might die, psilocybin, lsd, iboga, work through this feeling submit, have radical acceptance, without psychedelic feeling comes on, anchor that in the body

breath on the way to calls, loss of control feeling, horrible, tighting in chest, deep deep breaths diffuse into toher parts of body, 5 second breathes, working up to 7 seconds, repeating to self, got this, gonna do best, no matter what happens, work through with partner, all gonna go as good as it can

instructors, all bleeding stops eventually

little comedy things

dark humor

safe consumption sites, people can show up to sites, bring own substances, can be illegal, they show up, we provide with safe harm reduction gear, new needles, ties, cookers, education and services

listeners open minded, some people against these sites think it stops there, how they gonna get better

part of what we do, offer counseling, crisis intervention, community resources, social services, legal aid, shelter services, case workers, rehabs, multidiscipinary staff, nurses, primary care,

nurse can go hey this is inconvenient, canada, its not expensive, it’s covered,

we do a lot of things there

we monitor their use, different booths, stay safe with veins, avoid overdose, monitor with oxygen near by, first aid equipment nearby

not allowed to test the drugs, people coming in with dope theyr’e not sure what’s in it

tester dose, hoping for safe supply

covid 19, drug users difficult to social distance

dealers don’t do house calls, cut down on crime

safer version of same drug

safe supplies, covid 19 outbreak, positive side effect on drug war

great to have sites like this for psychedelics, safe mdm, mescaline, shamans first responders

offer experiences

recreation, relieve stress, maybe someone what’s to work with tantra, whole spectrum of dd

canada huge laxing of scrutiny of psychedelics, whole countries goes I guess they’re not that bad

covid cannabis completely essential

psychedelics starting to get accepted

most universities and colleges have a psychedelic society

trip sitting workshop

whole gamut of people there

stay safe, hold space, understand psychedelics

allows thought psychedelics, people would throw away caution, concerned they don’t want to make mistakes

sets and settings

having areas that are safely run, not so structured that people feel like cattle, feel like hospitals or clinics

you feel stigmatized, hospitals, staff, people in uniforms, triggering,

grass roots, not in a health center

one nurse 4 harm reduction workers on duty at all times

power point, teach for free every summer,

click through see tips

make you feel more comfortable

training in first response

get ideas first aid program for trip sitters

be in psychedelic space

blue sky budget

thought experiments, ego, psychedelic do a great job, showing ego, strengths and weaknesses in survival, how it relates to others, seeing it as putting aside ideologies, looking objectively more

not having it be one person who has all the ideas, everyone be open to education

rely on quick studies, flashed in news, eating chocolate will extend life,

read it, no research background, wording will be oh yeah I guess that’s true

people don’t have enough education, research, basic naturalistic education, would help people

people do a good job making decisions when have information

protests against covid restrictions, education them on why restrictions are there

heart and kidneys, understand it make decisions well informed

we should have multiple people appointed to make decisions from different disciplines

bio-psycho-social approach

huge open minded perspective

first nations elders on staff

take on very respected roles there, in treatments

not just about having certain people, professionals of certain kind

take on as many people as possible

with sites,

eco villages,

festivals,

harm reduction, first aid, 3 to 5 thousand people 5 massive stages, field, go into forest, weeks setting up, acts, musical guests, workshops

everybody who helped out, bunch of different skills

different things we can take up and work together, sharing

why risk burn out, leads to error, share load

big part of that ecological village, really early wide menu of education available to people early in life

different intelligence, not just iq, natural intelligence, grade one planting a seed, watching seed, tail come out the bottom so exciting, that’s what we don’t nurture in children, not everyone is the mathematician

give resources to feel meaningful

having balance of things people agree on

trauma informed approach, perspective, methodology

means every human being experiences life differently experiences trauma differently

respondeand adapt differently, don’t just assume you’ve been through all the same experiences I have, treat you like somebody has had own life own experiences

something activates or affects you, western med, behavioral problems

different things we have to look at

level I don’t understand, ecological village, avoid causing pain and suffering like you see in big citys, respecting each other

a lot of access to mindfulness meditation

understanding of own self, we all experience struggles with physical and mental health, bio-psycho-social approach to things

everybody sees those areas of life as a balance, diet sleep nutrition

mind functioning optimally, face challenges that come day to day

experience good community

spiritual, transcendence

maslow hierarchy of human needs

before you can help somebody achieve the feeling that they have worth

strenghts weaknesses, ability to grow

don’t allow people to build up hierarchy of needs

biological needs, most people don’t sleep enough, proper diet for their body

some people need 8 9 hours of sleep

at our sites, we don’t have access to enough of is food

don’t have access to good sleep and shelter, dope sick, not eating properly, medical problems from lifestyle, stress

control of environment, of own bodily autonomy

lifes not under threat shelter, stability, homeless, need to get shelter first, access to food resources, health care,

a lot of people healthy, making enough money can buy decent food, not feeling connected with people

problem of isolation

so many people angry, stir crazy, not supposed to live like this

natural to feel like shit

feel like life’s falling apart

feeling like going crazy

sitting in isolation

needs met, nice self esteem, not about situation you’re in, outbreak, having ideas of your strengths of weaknesses, grow

psychedelics

want to do more in the field build up hierachy of needs

not just one therapists idea of it

see hierarchy of needs daily

some clients are homeless, some have jobs

liability, waivers, first responders, doctors, paramedics

is it a paramedics job to save your life

is every single illness and injury treat able

no on arrive, experience, we know that patient will not survive, doesn’t mean we did not do our job properly

harm reduction manual

there could be a framework,

check list in place

wasn’t because of negligence

stress on the heart is what we’re talking about

paramedics job not to save your life, follow guidelines

trip sitter someone holding space in altered state, guidelines rituals from peoples experiences, elders, shamans doctors, first responders,

basic life support manual

process of assessing

do they have pulse, people survive being shot in the face

decompensating shock, nothing to do to save their life

follow guidelines and policies, same training, skills assessments,

documentation

got there didn’t check pulse

not doing job up to par

some type of regulations leave room for fact variables

dont’ know of childhood trauma their not aware of

suicidal ideations, don’t know what else is going on with them

safe set and setting

set up intention create control environment, comfort connection

safety plan,

something goes wrong, that’s not your fault

good samaratin act, small amount of drugs, people don’t get arrested

not getting charged, new thing in canada,

just for when in emergency

psychedelic salon

please take with grain of salt, not be all end all, lots of awesome authorities in the field

instagram flight of thoughts

community needs

flight of thoughts.blog

research on there, for diploma program literature reviews,

Climate change greatest slow moving danger

threat is so large, use platform to help out and bend the trajectory of the virus in the us, given our bad start in the fight against it

credentials, masters in science journalism

hopefully these tips will be helpful

us focused

first thing, no need to panic, worst thing you can do in a situation like this

take care of your self first

do one relaxing thing a day, exercise, meditation, a nap or bath, whatever will help keep in level headed state

calmly rationally seek out knowledge from reliable sources

armed with knowledge, make smart decisions, help others

take care of own body and health, boost immune system, reduce burden on health care system, clearer head to make better decisions, keeps you available to help others

docs nurses, and health care practitioners going to have hands full, if we keep our bodies in good shape, we can assist others

us is going to have to fight this battle pretty much blindly from a data stand point

so far behind on testing, I believe we no longer have time to catch up

window closed on strategy of containment

chems used in test, in short supply lack of test kits, lack of capacity, don’t think aggressive testing is viable anymore

don’t think we have the time to all the tests and contain this

already brewing in a big way

lag between infection and illness

not all hope is lost

another data point, most important metric, how burdened health care systems become

“true case fatality rate”, no true cfr, varies from city to city state to state country to country, determined by whether health care system gets overwhelmed

flatten the curve

we are the ones who determine the CFR, every choice we make pushes number up or down

in the us, our dotted lines is lower than in other places, not everyone is insured, many more people getting sick but not getting tested, spreading it to others

even insured may have incentives not to get tested

free testing, not sure how much will help us now

docs, nurses, lack enough protective gear

masks not replenished since 2009

1% of estimated 3.5 billion masks the nation would need

5 million 95 masks in stockpile expired

larger percentage of health care workers will fall ill and need to be quarantined

don’t horde face masks, leave them for health care workers, shortage of supply

if you become sick you should wear a mask, but until then you have other means to protect yourself, health care workers do not

health care system capacity line, health care system in Lombardi, Italian outbreak, rated 9.9 out of 10, various us states, no where comes close to 9.9

our health system capacity is much much lower than Lombardi’s, much less margin for error

in any/every way you can start social distancing, because we have basically run out of time, start now, this power lies in your hands, anytime you have a choice about whether or not to go out, stay home

sad fact, here in us, our leaders have failed us miserably

we citizens are smarter and more capable than they are, and we by our actions can take control and fight back this virus

stay in, don’t spread to others, can spread asymptomatically

cost of staying home will be different for some than others, for this reason, govt should compensate those who take financial hit for financial good…that cost would be dwarfed by financial cost of letting the virus ravage as many lives as it would without your intervention

corona virus is here, no matter what we will pay a price, paid in human lives or financial aid

take care of yourself

stay informed

do you best to help out people on front lines

do our best now to bend the curve, be more like korea or taiwan

we have power in our hands, make the right choice

anytime you have the ability, stay in

beat this back, we can all go celebrate afterwards

Prepping Pyramid

Basic Preparedness and the Prepping Pyramid TPP246

Basic Preparedness Prepping Pyramid
The term prepping refers to the process by which you incrementally increase your level of preparedness for emergency/disaster on a continuum from short-term self-reliance to long-term self-sufficiency.

The term preps can be defined as tangible items or systems that you acquire or build and use in prepping. While some people may include intangible things such as weapons training, drills, skill development, etc. in their definition of preps, for the purpose of this piece, the focus is on physical items.

The stereotype that survivalists live alone in underground bunkers in the middle of nowhere is rarely accurate. The media sensationalizes the extreme cases, but the reality is that a holistic family oriented survival plan involves several locations and several different scales. I’ve organized the list below in order of scale from the smallest to the largest caches of preps in a pyramidal model to represent overlapping zones.

1. Body

2. Bug Out Bag

3. Bug Out Vehicle

4. Workplace/School

5: Home

6: Bug Out Location

Body

Preppers promote taking some level of responsibility for your safety and security by not only developing self-defense, first-aid, and other survival skill sets, but by carrying implements, tools, devices, and supplies on your person at all times. Having preps on your person isn’t only so you can help yourself and your family, it’s also so you can help others in need.

What you carry on your person is often referred to as “Every Day Carry” or “EDC”. On this scale your preps will include an array of smaller survival gear items. The number of items you carry will be determined by the amount of pockets, belt accessories, carabiners, etc. you’re comfortable with. Fashion and function can be hard to reconcile, but it’s worth an attempt. Many people walk through the world without care or thought of the potential for anything to go wrong. The expectation that something bad will “never happen to me” is a symptom of what is clinically called “normalcy bias”. This is a psychological tendency to avoid considering and logically preparing for disruptions in modern business-as-usual life.

Unfortunately if we encounter bad guys on the street, chances are police won’t arrive on the scene until the incident is over. If we’re in a disaster situation, emergency medical responders may not be able to get to us in the time it takes to die or become seriously ill from preventable causes such as bleeding, dehydration, infection, etc.

Items often carried every day by preppers may include some of the following:

cutting tools, fire making tools, multi-tool, parachute cord, led light, compass, first-aid items (band-aids, alcohol pads), whistle, water purification tablets, emergency medical info card, list of emergency contacts, bandana, cell phone with additional charged battery, flash drive, notepad, writing utensil, “forever” postage stamps, prepaid phone card, cash, checks, herbal energy pills, p38 can opener, water bottle, pepper spray, misc. legal self-defense implements…

Bug Out Bag (BOB)

The “Bug out Bag”, a.k.a. “BOB”, is the survivalist slang for what is more officially known as a 72-hour emergency kit. However, the critical distinction is that a BOB must be in the form of a back-pack that can allow you to move on foot, hands-free.

On this scale of preps, you may have some of the same items that you’d have for EDC, however in greater lengths, quantities, container sizes, etc. as you’ll have the main column of the bag, plus many extra pockets, compartments, straps, clips, etc.

Here’s a list of some of the items often found in or attached to BOBs.

More fire making tools, more parachute cord, flashlight, batteries, candles, first aid kit, extra medications, hand crank/solar emergency weather radio, signal mirror, toilet paper, tweezers, toothbrush, misc. toiletries, sun block, bug spray, warm clothes (kept dry in a large zip lock bag), rain gear, gloves, hat, sun glasses, mess kit (eating dish/utensils), lightweight pot for cooking/boiling water, salt/spices, three days worth of dry food, hooks/sinkers, wild edible plant identification books, bigger water bottle, water filtration devices, 5 gallon collapsible water jug, small bottle of bleach, folding shovel, wire saw, sewing needles and floss, pen or pencil wrapped with duct tape, pen or pencil wrapped with fishing line, full size notebook, envelopes, plastic bags, garbage bags, survival manuals, entertainment devices such as books or games, documentation package (including emergency contacts, local emergency service provider phone numbers, evacuation procedures/plans/packing checklists, multiple evacuation routes, encrypted bank account, social security, etc. numbers, list of family medications/medical conditions, etc.), maps, sleeping bag, space blanket, tube tent, therma-rest pad, tarp, poly sheeting, legal self-defense tools carried in accordance with local law…

It helps to separate and categorize your items into zip-lock bags and distribute the bags into to different pockets and compartments for easy access. The bags also help keep your gear dry.

This sounds like a lot of stuff but if properly organized and compacted a lot of it can comfortably fit in/on a large camping pack. Depending on the nature of the situation, you may want to drop a lot of weight so you can cover more ground on foot. In Saving Private Ryan, the scene in which the translator joins the unit shows how a combat-inexperienced soldier tries to pack everything he was issued in his bag for the mission, and is made to leave most of it behind by his fellow soldiers. This is a useful bit of insight demonstrating that “the more you know the less you need,” and that you have to be realistic about your ability to haul more than the bare minimum.

Your normal commuting vehicle (which may or not be your “Bug Out Vehicle”) should always contain your BOB so that it will be accessible wherever you drive. Storing it in the trunk also ensures you’ll never forget it at home, and when you need to lighten the load and take a few items out, you can lock them in your trunk or locked box in a flatbed truck.

Of course if you’re riding a bus, if you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, or riding a bike, it won’t be feasible to bring your BOB with you. In those situations you’ll be relying on EDC, or a smaller backpack with a selection of items from your BOB depending on the situation. For example, if you’re hiking, you’d want to grab a selection of items from your BOB and put them in your day pack.

Most importantly, every member of your family should have a BOB, and every BOB should contain the same version of the documentation package. In an emergency you’ll then be able to co-ordinate your response based on documented protocols that everyone has the current printed version of.

Bug Out Vehicle (BOV)

Your “Bug Out Vehicle” may be a huge 4-wheel-drive monster or a compact car. Older diesel trucks are preferable as they have less electrical components that can fail, and they can be converted to run on veggie oil. Whatever you prefer and have the means to acquire can serve as your BOV, though traditionally it’s a truck or SUV. All that’s required is that it be stocked with extra preps and be equipped with accessories that will optimize performance and provide redundancies in evacuation scenarios.

Besides simply scaling up some of your preps (such as a 5 gallon bucket of dry food that preferably doesn’t require cooking, one or more gallons of water, a larger first aid kit, etc. the following are some preps specific to the BOV:

Flares, basic tools, spare parts (headlights, belts, bulbs, etc.), quarts of oil, extra fluids, map books, solar power system, power inverter, spare tire, snow chains, jack, blankets, tent, boots, entrenching tool, books, gas can (keep empty unless it can be stored safely and securely), more legal self-defense tools transported in accordance with local law, any other large utility/emergency items that don’t fit in or are not appropriate for your BOB.

Every family vehicle should be to some degree prepped to function as a BOV, even if there’s one larger vehicle that’s designated as the main BOV.

Workplace/School

This refers to the place where most of your time is spent outside of the home, wherever that may be. The goal would be to get your colleagues or co-workers on-board with prepping so that they collaborate and pool resources to ensure that there are preps on-site. Whether in a basement, storage closet, or under your desk you should try to get some amount of food/water/medical supply storage set up. If nothing else, try to convince whoever’s in charge to at least have emergency kits on-site that are sized appropriately for the number of people in your office, dorm, etc.

Most likely if done right, you can store a lot without it being a nuisance and have some sense of security knowing that if you end up stuck there, you won’t die of dehydration, starvation, or mild injuries.

Home

Without being too extreme, you should see your home as your fort. It’s the place where you let down your guard at night and go to sleep. It’s the place where you raise your family, or are being raised by your family. It’s where you should feel the most safe and secure, and where you should have the most control of your survival. Again, many of the prep items you’ll want at home have been listed above, but here are some preps that are unique to the home:

large water tanks, rain water catchment systems, months to years worth of long term food storage in the form of canned foods and dry foods including your favorite grains, legumes, seeds (for eating, sprouting, and planting), nuts, spices, dried herbs, dried fruits, etc. in 5 gallon bucket/mylar bag/oxygen absorber kits on a rotation system so you “eat what you store and store what you eat”, sprout jars, green house, permaculture garden (food forest if possible), irrigation systems, herbal medicine cabinet, organic recycling center (i.e. compost, vermiculture, humanure, etc), guard dog(s), livestock, food dehydrator, canning equipment, solar power system with battery bank, more legal weapons, low and high tech security systems, toiletry reserves, fuel reserves (gas, firewood, etc.), generator, full camping gear for the whole family, bigger/more specialized hand/power tools, fire-proof lock box for important documents, back up computers, back up external hard drives, lots of useful practical/instructional books and videos, cash, precious metal reserves, large self-assembled or store bought emergency kits…

Bug Out Location (BOL)

The “Bug Out Location” a.k.a. “BOL” or “survival retreat” is your ultimate destination in the case of forced or voluntary evacuation from your normal place of residence. Ideally it would be far out of the urban and suburban zones though not necessarily totally isolated. For those who can afford the luxury, the BOL is a piece of rural land that you own and have put some kind of legal temporary or permanent inhabitable structure on (trailer, teepee, yurt, cabin, house, natural building, etc.)

If you don’t have the luxury to buy land, you may discover that you have relatives living in the countryside, or friends living on farms with whom you can pre-arrange to stay with under an agreement that you’ll pay rent, or do work-trade.

No matter how you gain access to a temporary or permanent living situation for you and your family, what matters is that you have a plan in place. The plan should ensure that you have a main BOL and several fall back locations if the main location is inaccessible, and have multiple routes to each location. It’s also important to work out a system whereby if members of your family or group reach a certain rally point, there’s a predefined way to “post” inconspicuous communications about who’s reached that point, when they got there, and where they left to.

In terms of the scales of preps, the main BOL will often have the largest stockpile of preps when you factor in the ability to hide or bury large caches and the ability to establish permaculture edible forest gardens, ponds, springs, streams, swales, wood lots, wind power, solar power, micro-hydro systems, etc. Ultimately the ideal BOL would be a rural homestead. However the extent to which it’s developed by the time you need it will be determined by how much time, energy, and money you can afford to put into it while you’re not actually living on it.

In rural zones, the land itself is a prep. The more you do to prep the landscape, the more yields you’ll produce that are regenerative. In an apartment or small urban lot, you’re usually not able to access and produce renewable resources on the scale needed to be self-sufficient. Urban preps are generally only going to serve for a finite period of self-reliance until the supplies run out. It’s worth noting that in both urban and rural contexts, self-sufficiency is rarely achieved on a household level, rather it requires the functional interdependence of a small community.

Ideally if you’re “bugging out” to your BOL, you’ll have taken as many of the preps from the smaller levels of the pyramid with you so you’ll be combining preps as well.

The BOL is typically seen as the end point of the game where if you’re successful at making it there alive you’ll be relatively safe, secure, and supplied. However, most preppers acknowledge to varying degrees and extremes that to be prepared while being surrounded by the ill-prepared is a recipe for disaster. Generally, the higher the population density, the greater the risk of being jumped, besieged, or raided. So the more remote you are, the less likely the ill-prepared will be to expend the energy to find and take your provisions. There’s a trade-off though which is that the further you are from at least a small town, the fewer services are available. Also, without neighbors (who you may need to rely on to save your life someday or even just barter with) your survivability and quality of life might be diminished.

Re-Establishing a Culture of Preparedness

No individual, family, or group is an island. Ideally the largest step of the prepping pyramid would be a culture of preparedness wherein redundancy is built into every system that the population relies on for basic survival. It’s not utopian, a hundred years ago it was common sense. According to prominent prepper Stewart Rhodes in episode 602 of The Survival Podcast, “during the Cold War, this country had enough grain to feed all of its people for three years in the event of a nuclear winter, now they have enough to feed all of us half a loaf of bread.”
Our ancient and recent ancestors had the wisdom to live by the ways of the ant, not the grasshopper (see Aesop’s fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper”). In the modern survivalist movement, it’s accepted that winter is coming again as it has in the past and will in the future.
Apocalypse would be an easy way out, but in all likelihood, the world will continue to cycle with nature, not end. We’ll have to choose to be prepared. Moreover, it doesn’t take TEOTWAWKI (“the end of the world as we know it”) for any individual or family to experience an acute localized disaster. Be it a job loss, an injury, death of a loved one, etc, when the s**t his hit your fan, it’s your preps that will carry you through in a state of relative comfort and help buffer desperation.

Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast has provided numerous planning and strategy tools such as the “threat probability matrix” and notion of “disaster commonality” (see episode 166) to help people identify the threats that are most likely to occur in their personal lives, location, climate, etc. and understand that in many ways the fundamental preps and planning needed to survive anything from the “mundane to the insane” are the generally the same.
It’s important while prepping to be creative and make it fun-based not fear-based. Thanks to the modern survival movement there’s a fail-safe principle built-in which essentially states that whatever you do to be prepared for disaster should improve your quality of life whether or not s**t hits the fan! The best example is growing some portion of your own food.

Just avoid panic buying. As with Permaculture the best solutions are small and slow. Continually incrementally add to your preps when grocery items go on sale, when you get extra cash, when you can score something on Craigslist, when there’s a yard sale, etc. Start small, make it fun, get into the groove and you’ll enjoy having a more sensible lifestyle that actually empowers you to be an evermore safe, secure, confident, and dutiful cosmic citizen, community member, and family member.
