Ecological Security, Treeage, Self Quarantine, and more Land Lessons TPP271

Play

In this episode I share more land lessons and updates focusing on a tree care, self care, overall resilence

My Non Verbatim Show Notes:

Last night, dancing in the night, warm and dry, seizing the night, before pouring rain, but still coming down, went out and planted an array of different varieties of seeds, mostly annual herbs and veggies, to be an understory guild around fruit and nut tree plantings

its been a couple of months, phase in and out of blocks of time doing this rehab on this project, that has had exquisite design implementations, that have just been, when you dance and have romance with nature, things can get ahead of you pretty fast, takes people power once established to do maintenance, more or less light, head, cold, moisture, aspects can be set and forget, stuff that needs to be maintained

I’m coming in as reinforcements, do feng shui, rehab, text book permaculture design system, my triage/treeage, set foot on this property I bow to the ground first evening, celebrating the union, faceplant to the earth, made vows, spirits of the land, ancestors, I will do my best to take care of you if you take care of me, never want to set foot off this property again, not wanting to re enter the mix of the matrix, was barely becoming aware of that thing in china, yeah they’re probably gonna lock it down pretty hard, it was one my radar as a prepper, had been since early stages, now it’s exponentially increasing, I’m piping in the up to the minute facts,

prepper fantasy come to life, first days I was here it was quiet, too quiet, picking up from the colony reality tv show, ran a drill of what is exactly happening right now, both seasons of the show, everyone should watch that to see how to navigate the social politics of extreme austerity, they nailed it, a lot of the social dynamics, check it out

this feels like that situation where you’re gonna have to take inventory of what you can mcguevyer and a-team together, food, shelter, water, etc.

its a fucking miracle, all the stars aligning to put me where I’m at now

tragic irony, paradox, you could be doing everything, could still be infected, its a mind fuck, I feel blessed to at least have for myself the optimism of feeling like I have a survival retreat, if I have to go out and do missions into the matrix I have a place to go back to

I’ve done self quarantine already, have the means to extend that for a long time, financially and with preps stored, continue to cycle through

that sort of recap on this last couple of months, getting on to this land and saying to myself, you better maximize the ecological security, resiliency, and productivity of this land now, so you’re not struggling later in more austere times, so filling up every possible container with water

strategizing on rainwater catchment, looking at overgrown system and having to train the eye and the mind and the deeper settle aspects of intuition to feel into where on this design are the places that need the most love and attention and get the most yield, could be immediate, long term, that’s the triage

that’s the training from first aid in cert, community emergency response team training, anyone who understands triage in a mass casualty event, this site is a mass casualty event for trees that have been chewed bare at the base by adorable critters that I will not by any means ever poison, but will have to develop strategies of what’s gonna make it on its own, war metaphors, if you’re gonna survive here, you’ve got to determine systematically, what gets primary care immediately, literally tagging, this tree’s dead, pull it out, chop and drop, mulch in place, so it doesn’t confuse us as we’re going to find the trees that will make it and then sorting the efforts into what needs the most care now, what is doing okay and can wait a little bit longer, what is barely hanging, maybe a goner, lost cause beyond the point of no return, we’ll do a little bit to keep it alive but can’t over extend resources, sorting the efforts into what needs the most care now, and what is doing okay and can wait longer

may look fine today but need to be maintained to keep that level of vigor

that has been the name of the game out here, stacking sats, hodling crypto, dollar cost averaging, smart trading, holding, risking exposure, social distancing, sanitation, strength of immune system

lot of different rodents, trash heaps, places that need tlc, cautious about dust, stirring up a lot of dried rodent feces and urine, dust masks for that, praying hard, really really meditating on the throat and lungs, not gonna go into my herbal remedy approach

don’t want to make any mistakes in any medical advice or natural medicine remedy advice

so that’s the zone that I have been in, meditating on my health, if you don’t want to end up in the hospital, better not be stupid, careless, move to fast, do something mindless to end up in a hospital where they feed you dead toxic food which lowers your immune system, trapped air flow, you’ll be exposed to virsuses, every pathogen on earth cohabitating there, you don’t want to take the space from someone who needs it, slow the fuck down, mindful slow down, don’t get snagged on rusty chicken wire, don’t stomp on rusty nails move slowly, deliberately

had a few nicks, have strategies for maintaining the surface of my skin, phased there immune responses to various stimuli, various symptoms, I feel like a million dollars right now

not medical advice, timely spiritual practice revelations, maybe things happening for a reason, maybe things being synchronistic, some exciting news

its been a wet dream come true to get the fuck back here from mini mission to babylon, before the rains to get dense polyculture seed mix planting into these large donuts of semi composted wood chip mulch around 20 or 30 beautiful trees, need to be cared for, protected, there needs to be a design consideration for anchoring the human activity to regular maintenance of these young developing trees so they don’t get neglected

treeage pulled out a lot of dead twigs, like profusion test, check of consciousness, methodology of steps to determine the vital signs, without equipment, say you’re in a battle field or disaster situation, doing triage, system of tagging and sorting people who are ambulant, can get up and move, put in an area, people who are alive but can’t move, people in critical state of blood loss or other things, can’t speak but conscious, a whole process, not an expert, doing that with trees, which are dead which are alive, you can slowly apply pressure to tips that look super dry, without ripping off more than necessary, take a dry tip, does it flex, bend, snap off, more resistance there, tiny little scratch test, be careful, mindful, scratch a tiny bit, moist green life, interesting practice of shit, if there is any life left, it may be all the way down in the roots, and not know

don’t yank it out, kick it over, or stomp on it, it will have a chance

is there growth below the graft, we go through that process, determine which as salvageable, probably about 20 cubic yards of wood chip mulch, remnants of a bigger load, composted nicely, it was a good mix, cycling through

full disclosure, went to psytribe valentine’s day party knew at that time it would be basically risking death, if I go to that social event, breaking what I had already been feeling was a need to maintain the social distance

everybody elses winter funk, I felt like a million dollars, but everyone drinking sweetened cocktails, smoking cigarettes, lots of love, like clockwork and orgy of viral spread, as far as I can imagine, at that time no indication of a corona virus case in california, no one in state of panic or alarm, in my heart of hearts with or without corona, you better be self inquisitive, is this something that is going to possibly, its the cost benefit, I gotta see my tribe, I gotta see my people

I thought to myself I could pass on this party, but no I need it, I want it, I will be sad if I don’t go,

so I went I danced all night, best party, best vibes, so much to celebrate, for me, global pandemic looming, we were blissfully ignorant for the most part at that point

or course, like clock work, little scratch in the throat be morning, and also when I slept, I felt like there was a bit of a draft I didn’t account for, oh shit, good thing I’m gonna bug out to this land and be totally isolated, and have practically zero contact with anybody for almost 2 weeks, and that was the drill, that was the self quarantine drill and I went through a bizarre fever, and very very mild upper respiratory, pseudo,, proto coughs that didn’t really take hold

as soon as I got tiny tickle in throat, I said battle mode, self quarantine, no more solid food, not gonna say the herb I used but basically did what you would consider like a ayahuasca dieta, I wanted to connect with some of the herbs of this land and say already, take me I’m yours, if I’m goin out, I’m going out in a beautiful nature place, romance with this new to me herb, highly potent and medicinal and I’m not trying to start an mlm taking about it, also placebo effect, okay, I love myself, I do my absolute best to nurture and support and boost my immune system, this is a test, no fear, no worries, just soldier on, about 36 hour period where I was pretty incapacitated with fever, boiled from the inside out, lymph nodes didn’t swell, wasn’t miserable, almost had no mucus, maybe one night I put some very gentle soft, natural soaping solution onto a bit of paper towel, and inserted to stop one night of a bit of a faucet out of one nostril, then it was fine, little bits of phelm over the course of a couple of weeks, I never get sick, hardly ever have fever, keto paleo, no added sugar, no processed foods

a lot of confidence in my immune system, knowing I’m not constantly inflamed, eliminated grains, legumes, dairy, sugar

we’re talking, fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, mostly fish, some poultry, lots of herbs, not gonna get into specific choices of things

I hunkered down, self quarantine, bona fide drill, real threat, I swabbed that whole party, water filter, washed hands but so much hugging and talking, everybody spraying particles

fever was its own psychedelic experience but I would say over all on scale of 1-10, I was surprised by how mild most of the symptoms were, how limited in duration, whatever it was, there’s no reason for me to believe I had exposed to corona virus, it was more lik ea drill, what was off though is that I wouldn’t normally get sick, I wouldn’t normally be getting sick, I would expect ot be fine, novel, no precedent in the immune system, you don’t get any freebees from immune system, you’re fighting a new…

I don’t have mastery of virology, been studying it, I out on the other side of that, no residue phelgm, I feel this more today like a billlion dollars, not selling any herbal secret, I had a profound experience last night out there, seizing the night, humbled by cold and rain, dry with multiple layers of tactical casual gardening clothes and rain gear

and also knowing you don’t want to be out here to long but you gotta stay warm, you gotta dance to live, dance to stay warm, get seeds in ground before you miss the rains, living on the edge, some people are raiding walmart, I’m out there dancing to stay warm and dry and get seeds in the ground, healthy panic mode

win/win, force multiplier, to say to these trees, you take care of me I take care of you, I love you, this is a beautiful romance, I will nurture you, nourish you, and cherish you and be shaded by you and fed by you and you will be the habitat,

as zanzibar said in a recent podcast, polywombic, helping to create habitat fro wildlife, the frogs and toads, almost to tears, so heart melting, I’m just bumping into them, got my light on, actually squared off with one, I got out of its way, the power of this being in front of me, wow, amazing

a beautiful realm, thrilled to be here, I hope I survive everything, a stay strong, do the ecological magic to work this land, make it abundant, build on the strategy of these trees, we’re gonna guild plant around these trees, establish for myself a daily ish route that are dispersed around

keep fertigated, keep moist, rather than orchard over there that does its thing, irrigated, integrating human pathway daily commute, walking through it, gotta go out to where the trees are, kitchen garden growies, overlaying zones 1 thourgh 3, comingling them

small enough to all be convenient to access not so dispersed that its a big chore, you should be walking, hiking, creating a bunch of mini zone one plantings that will be stitched together through earth works, ponding, fertigation, candy land game board

to me that’s been the most important objective, get to that point, so many critters, no mercy, don’t just get ot have a little raised bed box, your veggie garden nope, it will be pulled from underground, checked from above ground, slithered on, grubbed on, little stems

doesn’t work in this level of wilderness, going to have to plant a huge diverse array of sacrificial planting,s

okay with attracting competitors, be happy they are coming around doing their bits, if you go from seeds, the key leverage point of that is that a lot are dirt cheap you don’t need to be that extravagant

I was thrilled to get to that point to have survived that period of self quarantine, to bond with the herbs o the land and to at the moment of the rains beginning have had the hard and soft scaping rehab triage, new where to go int eh dark, with a headlamp those mulch donuts were my tags on the tree age, visual ques, very systematically, need to draw them out on a pirate treasure map for now its in subconscious

don’t want to forget the ones off the path, have a route that trains me to get to all of them incentivize that habit, bend the rules of permaculture zonation, stretch, this tree needs treatment, or pruning, care, change contours so basin is gonna hold water,

all the care you gotta have a reason to care, go out there, planting things around it, things I’m gonna harvest quickly that’s the name of the game,

what was put into action last night

many reasons in spite of whats happening in the world, to be ecstatic and celebrate in the bitter sweet glory of having earned the privilege and luxury to have at least 75 to 85 percent buffering ot be able to follow the best practices, not have to compromise to much

the worse things get, I can scale into and scale out of the official protocols and restrictions and just try to keep myself on a tight leash to this property

the most tragic irony would be to have done all this work, my lifes work to be

secure ecologically and have this opportunity and then be swept up in net, or do something stupid end up the hospital and then be exposed

whatever I’ve done to build my immune system to this point, it’s all nullified by being hospitalized

this is what’s real, this is as fucking real as it gets part of my strategy to adapt to his moment is to really do the triage on making sure the people I love in the world really know it, making the amends, we don’t know who could be next

instead of worry, do the lower chakra things, focus on security, get that squared away and then really carefully feel into who needs to be reminded of your deep and true love for them

a lot of them are coming to me in my dreams, bubbling up to surface of inbox on their own

this is advice, make every day like valentines day from now until the vaccine an effective vaccine and beyond

no matter what your relationship is to a financial crisis, an epidemic, a pandemic, treat every day like valentines day, say namaste, every day and mean it

My Non Verbatim Show Notes:

S: Mom in east la, Paranoid, restless, gardening, getting into tarot, finally posting videos

TP: for a few months been in zombie apocalypse survival retreat bug out location farm stead site

trying to drum up online business, possibly sell of crypto at a loss, I got to a point where I decided I’ll take some calculated risks, maintain best practices for hygiene, physical distances, evolving protocols and procedures minding restrictions, come back to employment that I had, working for permaculture landscaping companies, with certified permaculture designer founders, one of them amazing former hollywood set designer, high end west side clients, beverly hills, santa monica, pacific palisades,

worked a lot in malibu, fancy parts of orange county

we’ve all be so drunk on prosperity, people do landscape yard make over, still kind of ornamental, even if more drought tolerant, still feel like you’d have to be a hippie to grow your own food, or veggie bed is quaint and cute, but I’m not gonna grow an edible jungle

Larry Santoyo, god father of LA permaculture, deep root, going back to the founders, trained a lot of people, paraphrase all these white hippie new age purple breathing wannabes want intergenerational households and back yard food forests, he’s like oh yeah, cross the la river on the east side and that’s the norm

I’m back in la. Swinging pick axes, because people want to grow food

tear up that front lawn, make some room in the parkways

essential services in agricultural sector, contracting ecological design, rain water harvesting, storm water diversion

still see mow and blow landscapers out there, poisoning insects, they’re out there doing their thing

we’re doing some more vital more protected, involving food production and security

interesting because one of last things I said to main employers after I ran to the hills, I love what we do, but I’m taking some time off while this is happening to build up my personal food security in the mountains, honestly I wouldn’t want to risk my life to just be flipping lawns in inedible ornamental landscapes, that’s the hill I want to die on, polishing brass on titantic, but if we’re gonna help people grow food, medicines, harvest rainwater, solar, composting, all the stuff we love to do for ourselves,

hope this supply chain shock, does what happened in cuba, ussr fell, had to be self sufficient over night, organic gardens every where, riding bikes, post peak oil, oil was cut off, crystal ball of the future

what has just happened with corona virus is an acceleration of what’s been predicted about climate change doom sayers

transapocalyptic business plan, help people grow food as licensed contractors

untouchable by gestapo, they gotta eat too, don’t break the hand the feeds you with that baton officer friendly

S: working in the garden composting in, rain catchers, filtering, lot of outdoor projects weren’t even able to get to fully because we were all working full time, perfect moment to spend more time and learn about that, gonna take permaculture certification, know practices more, getting hands dirty, even have fruit trees, is already super prepped to be a little edible jungle

wondering about a lot,

TP:

large percentage of content addressing this reality, feel like this is the time while people are paying attention and have the free time, the real stimulus package should be stimulating your soil, by stimulating it with compost tea, go back to work part time cuz you’re growing half your food

people geeky about permaculture already been doing this stuff for however long, wishing and hoping it would be the easy way not the hard way that their neighbors get on board, this is the hard way but not as bad as being at war,

ancestors were asked to fight the nazis, we’re just being asked to do nothing and stay at home

other people take the risk to feed you, could be a lot worse

S: psychologically damaging regardless, abrupt coercive, that’s how it feels, people really strong mentally, people who are gonna be okay, just wonder about people affected psychologically, gatherings, basic human things we are used to, not measurable, hasn’t been done before

the indefinite part of that, of all of this is what’s most draining

difficulty of it, following rules, not hard to do

TP: feel you on that, heart goes out to younger people, couldn’t imagine when my social circle was everything, now I’m more of a loner, it happens with age

when I was younger it was all about the group mind, clique, high school, punk scene, activist scenes, always hanging out

for me now, that’s not a priority, just want to do me, to be more secure

S: people who are single, recently heart broken, people who are teenagers, already don’t have freedom, now they have to be in abuse household, not in power, not in control of anything, I just wonder, if feel the energy of all that

TP: neighbors see you gardening?

S: people wearing masks, wondering if I should wear mask in my own yard

TP: yeah lead by example, studies are showing larger ranges than 6 feet to spread virus, Dr. Eric Ding take on headlines, on studies coming out, are the best, lot of good press and feedback, constantly myth busting things people use to minimize, rationalize cutting corners, whistling past the graveyard, so new, not one study could really be relied on the gospel truth, it could be disprove, everything is so new, highest level of precautionary principle, most extreme data 6 feet is not adequate, range of days living on surfaces, meters spread from the breath, like the idea of people getting crafty with making designer masks, making lemonade out of lemons

a lot less sickness will be passed around in general if this becomes the new normal, people won’t be so pressured to put on make up, different game of hooking up, gotta get to know someone cuz you can’t see their face

S: thinking about, a few plots of land, totally empty, guerrilla gardening, want to empower people but have to stay away from each other, don’t want to be the only garden on the block, for other people that live in la totally fine to garden on the parkway along the side walk, doesn’t belong to the property owner, belongs to the city

TP: Ron Finley guerrilla gardening civil disobedience, fought the city, made it possible for everyone to grow food in the parkway

S: heard about that, started one in 2017, in an apartment I used to live at, been gardening for a while, you gotta talk to people and let them know otherwise you’ll be the only one gardening, can’t eat everything, it’s good to share, its great, a lot of people don’t know that

home depots closing in some areas, chaining off the seeds, not allowing people to buy seeds, I don’t know, saw some pictures, seeds were off limits

TP: weird stuff in ag industry, I been posting on craigslist for bulk discount produce, millions being dumped, most tragic thing, if I had the infrastructure I’d be collecting it, for composting, and for replanting, garlic, chives, green onions, potatoes, carrots, pineapple, list goes on

grocery store lots can be replanted from the produce section, gives a head start, beets, sweet potatoes, water cress, herbs that are plantable, in soil, intact, a whole garden project out of what’s already still alive at the grocery store, wasting so much, all those people backed up at the food bank, this is farmageddon 2.0, all the people who are trained to know what a transition to a local food security economy we study the history and strategies, just tapping our feet, when do people say we need to stop relying on the globalized just in time supply chain, we need to do edible landscaping

everything in la county civil engineer landscapers, some plants have a purpose, but for the most part, it’s pretty much inappropriate, not native, inedible ornamentals, for shiggles for rich people to look at, public policy nightmare, public edible ecological food forests, hand full of cities in the us, broken free of phobia of public edible landscapes, partnerships, stake holders, designers, you can imagine, of all the community gardens that are out there, plagued by junkies that come and shoot up, racoons, rats, critters, you don’t just get to have this picturesque tidy urban farm that doesn’t attract a lot of other issues, to be rewilding the urban landscape so you have a resilient ecosystem you can forage in, you have to give up some creature comforts, fighting all the animals

dream big, this is the time me and my peeps are gonna try to nudge that paradigm with all the strength we can muster if we can survive ourselves this is a time to show people what they’re missing

S: suggestions for starting gardens? What about where are the seeds

TP: sunset nursery, favorite nursery

there’s a lot of stuff going on in micro and macro economic landscape, try to be a few steps ahead, not as much as the insider trading congress people, didn’t get to in that trade, bet against america and win hard, bankrupting all the poor people

in general being a few steps a head, chaos all these factors, the dollar is being inflated infinite printing money unprecedented levels dilutes, weakens overprinted mighty dollar, value becomes less, economy has to absorb falsehood of unbacked fantasy currency, not gonna be over night that it’s value reduced

bailouts in 2008, other times in history increased supply, history of fiat currencies around the globe in a war, a government has only two options, raise taxes or print more money, printing money is like raising taxes, stealing value from people

bitcoin based on a hard cap, limited fixed supply digital gold, can’t be inflated

unlike dollars

people overspend, go into debt, addicted to spending

that could be a whole series on how all that works, bring people on how can articulate pivotal points better than me

so many things are shut down, businesses activities shut down, less demand

supply and demand in decline because of covid-19, and value of dollar is decreasing

doesn’t just get rebooted by pressing the its okay to go back to work button

geographically isolated economic collapse, not usually whole world

in u.s. buffered by oceans in world war 2

empire the was able to restructure the world, pimp the bombed countries, 3rd and 4th worlds, now everybody’s taking a big hit

on one had, bargain deals of the millennium, people desperate, start dumping assets on market, prices will be driven down, things will be up for grabs

the counterbalance to that, simultaneously scarce items that are in demand will get price gouged, and scalped

raw capitalism

some goods and services are gonna be cheaper than they’ve ever been, then stuff that will be so scarce, people will pay anything for it

for me, be savvy, build a future by having capital in reserve, apply money to long term regenerative ecological assets, food security infrastructure, for local gardening

buy stuff when people are trying to sell

sucks to be pilfering, scavenging salvaging from people in distress, but hey if they’re happy to have whatever they can get for it, you’ll make them happy

that’s why I wanted to go back to work because if everything I want is gonna go on sale, I better have more money to get it

lot of people doing whatever they gotta do, don’t just spend money on whatever, invest as much as possible into regenerative infrastructure, seed stock, live stock

S: think this is gonna effect the price of houses and land

TP: real estate market gonna take a major hit, people can’t even see properties, virtual open houses, real estate industry still moving along but it’s tore up, people can’t move around

the further you get from hipster zones, the cheaper land gets, because of age of farmers in america now, buying opportunities like never before, last couple generations of farm families haven’t been maintaining the farms, gone to cities, to tech jobs, to college, average age of farmer if pretty old,

you could lease land and be a tenant farmer, not responsible for huge hidden cost burdens of owning property

helping them, retrofit to be organic, permaculture, they may have tractors, crops, maybe even a business, if we can take the leap of faith out of overpriced hipster urban zones, go back to land, will have way better options than during the dust bowl, ag industry devastated by ecological disaster, as bad as climate change is we can go back to the land, still have hipster culture online, don’t have to be a shit kicker at local saw dust joint

new movement of back to the landers, forced out of over priced hipster zones, help out aging farmers, bring new energy, could have a whole reboot of american ag sector, organic sustainable, we’ll be all the better for it, healthier happier, next time mega super bug comes around

public health, they didn’t come out and ban sugary products, obesity, diabetes cofactor in deaths from covid

be careful, don’t work to hard, don’t want to end up anywhere near the hospitals, stay healthy avoid the hospital for their sake and yours but get shit done and plant some shit

Prepping Pyramid

Basic Preparedness and the Prepping Pyramid TPP246

Play

Basic Preparedness Prepping Pyramid
The term prepping refers to the process by which you incrementally increase your level of preparedness for emergency/disaster on a continuum from short-term self-reliance to long-term self-sufficiency.

The term preps can be defined as tangible items or systems that you acquire or build and use in prepping. While some people may include intangible things such as weapons training, drills, skill development, etc. in their definition of preps, for the purpose of this piece, the focus is on physical items.

The stereotype that survivalists live alone in underground bunkers in the middle of nowhere is rarely accurate. The media sensationalizes the extreme cases, but the reality is that a holistic family oriented survival plan involves several locations and several different scales. I’ve organized the list below in order of scale from the smallest to the largest caches of preps in a pyramidal model to represent overlapping zones.

1. Body

2. Bug Out Bag

3. Bug Out Vehicle

4. Workplace/School

5: Home

6: Bug Out Location

Body

Preppers promote taking some level of responsibility for your safety and security by not only developing self-defense, first-aid, and other survival skill sets, but by carrying implements, tools, devices, and supplies on your person at all times. Having preps on your person isn’t only so you can help yourself and your family, it’s also so you can help others in need.

What you carry on your person is often referred to as “Every Day Carry” or “EDC”. On this scale your preps will include an array of smaller survival gear items. The number of items you carry will be determined by the amount of pockets, belt accessories, carabiners, etc. you’re comfortable with. Fashion and function can be hard to reconcile, but it’s worth an attempt. Many people walk through the world without care or thought of the potential for anything to go wrong. The expectation that something bad will “never happen to me” is a symptom of what is clinically called “normalcy bias”. This is a psychological tendency to avoid considering and logically preparing for disruptions in modern business-as-usual life.

Unfortunately if we encounter bad guys on the street, chances are police won’t arrive on the scene until the incident is over. If we’re in a disaster situation, emergency medical responders may not be able to get to us in the time it takes to die or become seriously ill from preventable causes such as bleeding, dehydration, infection, etc.

Items often carried every day by preppers may include some of the following:

cutting tools, fire making tools, multi-tool, parachute cord, led light, compass, first-aid items (band-aids, alcohol pads), whistle, water purification tablets, emergency medical info card, list of emergency contacts, bandana, cell phone with additional charged battery, flash drive, notepad, writing utensil, “forever” postage stamps, prepaid phone card, cash, checks, herbal energy pills, p38 can opener, water bottle, pepper spray, misc. legal self-defense implements…

Bug Out Bag (BOB)

The “Bug out Bag”, a.k.a. “BOB”, is the survivalist slang for what is more officially known as a 72-hour emergency kit. However, the critical distinction is that a BOB must be in the form of a back-pack that can allow you to move on foot, hands-free.

On this scale of preps, you may have some of the same items that you’d have for EDC, however in greater lengths, quantities, container sizes, etc. as you’ll have the main column of the bag, plus many extra pockets, compartments, straps, clips, etc.

Here’s a list of some of the items often found in or attached to BOBs.

More fire making tools, more parachute cord, flashlight, batteries, candles, first aid kit, extra medications, hand crank/solar emergency weather radio, signal mirror, toilet paper, tweezers, toothbrush, misc. toiletries, sun block, bug spray, warm clothes (kept dry in a large zip lock bag), rain gear, gloves, hat, sun glasses, mess kit (eating dish/utensils), lightweight pot for cooking/boiling water, salt/spices, three days worth of dry food, hooks/sinkers, wild edible plant identification books, bigger water bottle, water filtration devices, 5 gallon collapsible water jug, small bottle of bleach, folding shovel, wire saw, sewing needles and floss, pen or pencil wrapped with duct tape, pen or pencil wrapped with fishing line, full size notebook, envelopes, plastic bags, garbage bags, survival manuals, entertainment devices such as books or games, documentation package (including emergency contacts, local emergency service provider phone numbers, evacuation procedures/plans/packing checklists, multiple evacuation routes, encrypted bank account, social security, etc. numbers, list of family medications/medical conditions, etc.), maps, sleeping bag, space blanket, tube tent, therma-rest pad, tarp, poly sheeting, legal self-defense tools carried in accordance with local law…

It helps to separate and categorize your items into zip-lock bags and distribute the bags into to different pockets and compartments for easy access. The bags also help keep your gear dry.

This sounds like a lot of stuff but if properly organized and compacted a lot of it can comfortably fit in/on a large camping pack. Depending on the nature of the situation, you may want to drop a lot of weight so you can cover more ground on foot. In Saving Private Ryan, the scene in which the translator joins the unit shows how a combat-inexperienced soldier tries to pack everything he was issued in his bag for the mission, and is made to leave most of it behind by his fellow soldiers. This is a useful bit of insight demonstrating that “the more you know the less you need,” and that you have to be realistic about your ability to haul more than the bare minimum.

Your normal commuting vehicle (which may or not be your “Bug Out Vehicle”) should always contain your BOB so that it will be accessible wherever you drive. Storing it in the trunk also ensures you’ll never forget it at home, and when you need to lighten the load and take a few items out, you can lock them in your trunk or locked box in a flatbed truck.

Of course if you’re riding a bus, if you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, or riding a bike, it won’t be feasible to bring your BOB with you. In those situations you’ll be relying on EDC, or a smaller backpack with a selection of items from your BOB depending on the situation. For example, if you’re hiking, you’d want to grab a selection of items from your BOB and put them in your day pack.

Most importantly, every member of your family should have a BOB, and every BOB should contain the same version of the documentation package. In an emergency you’ll then be able to co-ordinate your response based on documented protocols that everyone has the current printed version of.

Bug Out Vehicle (BOV)

Your “Bug Out Vehicle” may be a huge 4-wheel-drive monster or a compact car. Older diesel trucks are preferable as they have less electrical components that can fail, and they can be converted to run on veggie oil. Whatever you prefer and have the means to acquire can serve as your BOV, though traditionally it’s a truck or SUV. All that’s required is that it be stocked with extra preps and be equipped with accessories that will optimize performance and provide redundancies in evacuation scenarios.

Besides simply scaling up some of your preps (such as a 5 gallon bucket of dry food that preferably doesn’t require cooking, one or more gallons of water, a larger first aid kit, etc. the following are some preps specific to the BOV:

Flares, basic tools, spare parts (headlights, belts, bulbs, etc.), quarts of oil, extra fluids, map books, solar power system, power inverter, spare tire, snow chains, jack, blankets, tent, boots, entrenching tool, books, gas can (keep empty unless it can be stored safely and securely), more legal self-defense tools transported in accordance with local law, any other large utility/emergency items that don’t fit in or are not appropriate for your BOB.

Every family vehicle should be to some degree prepped to function as a BOV, even if there’s one larger vehicle that’s designated as the main BOV.

Workplace/School

This refers to the place where most of your time is spent outside of the home, wherever that may be. The goal would be to get your colleagues or co-workers on-board with prepping so that they collaborate and pool resources to ensure that there are preps on-site. Whether in a basement, storage closet, or under your desk you should try to get some amount of food/water/medical supply storage set up. If nothing else, try to convince whoever’s in charge to at least have emergency kits on-site that are sized appropriately for the number of people in your office, dorm, etc.

Most likely if done right, you can store a lot without it being a nuisance and have some sense of security knowing that if you end up stuck there, you won’t die of dehydration, starvation, or mild injuries.

Home

Without being too extreme, you should see your home as your fort. It’s the place where you let down your guard at night and go to sleep. It’s the place where you raise your family, or are being raised by your family. It’s where you should feel the most safe and secure, and where you should have the most control of your survival. Again, many of the prep items you’ll want at home have been listed above, but here are some preps that are unique to the home:

large water tanks, rain water catchment systems, months to years worth of long term food storage in the form of canned foods and dry foods including your favorite grains, legumes, seeds (for eating, sprouting, and planting), nuts, spices, dried herbs, dried fruits, etc. in 5 gallon bucket/mylar bag/oxygen absorber kits on a rotation system so you “eat what you store and store what you eat”, sprout jars, green house, permaculture garden (food forest if possible), irrigation systems, herbal medicine cabinet, organic recycling center (i.e. compost, vermiculture, humanure, etc), guard dog(s), livestock, food dehydrator, canning equipment, solar power system with battery bank, more legal weapons, low and high tech security systems, toiletry reserves, fuel reserves (gas, firewood, etc.), generator, full camping gear for the whole family, bigger/more specialized hand/power tools, fire-proof lock box for important documents, back up computers, back up external hard drives, lots of useful practical/instructional books and videos, cash, precious metal reserves, large self-assembled or store bought emergency kits…

Bug Out Location (BOL)

The “Bug Out Location” a.k.a. “BOL” or “survival retreat” is your ultimate destination in the case of forced or voluntary evacuation from your normal place of residence. Ideally it would be far out of the urban and suburban zones though not necessarily totally isolated. For those who can afford the luxury, the BOL is a piece of rural land that you own and have put some kind of legal temporary or permanent inhabitable structure on (trailer, teepee, yurt, cabin, house, natural building, etc.)

If you don’t have the luxury to buy land, you may discover that you have relatives living in the countryside, or friends living on farms with whom you can pre-arrange to stay with under an agreement that you’ll pay rent, or do work-trade.

No matter how you gain access to a temporary or permanent living situation for you and your family, what matters is that you have a plan in place. The plan should ensure that you have a main BOL and several fall back locations if the main location is inaccessible, and have multiple routes to each location. It’s also important to work out a system whereby if members of your family or group reach a certain rally point, there’s a predefined way to “post” inconspicuous communications about who’s reached that point, when they got there, and where they left to.

In terms of the scales of preps, the main BOL will often have the largest stockpile of preps when you factor in the ability to hide or bury large caches and the ability to establish permaculture edible forest gardens, ponds, springs, streams, swales, wood lots, wind power, solar power, micro-hydro systems, etc. Ultimately the ideal BOL would be a rural homestead. However the extent to which it’s developed by the time you need it will be determined by how much time, energy, and money you can afford to put into it while you’re not actually living on it.

In rural zones, the land itself is a prep. The more you do to prep the landscape, the more yields you’ll produce that are regenerative. In an apartment or small urban lot, you’re usually not able to access and produce renewable resources on the scale needed to be self-sufficient. Urban preps are generally only going to serve for a finite period of self-reliance until the supplies run out. It’s worth noting that in both urban and rural contexts, self-sufficiency is rarely achieved on a household level, rather it requires the functional interdependence of a small community.

Ideally if you’re “bugging out” to your BOL, you’ll have taken as many of the preps from the smaller levels of the pyramid with you so you’ll be combining preps as well.

The BOL is typically seen as the end point of the game where if you’re successful at making it there alive you’ll be relatively safe, secure, and supplied. However, most preppers acknowledge to varying degrees and extremes that to be prepared while being surrounded by the ill-prepared is a recipe for disaster. Generally, the higher the population density, the greater the risk of being jumped, besieged, or raided. So the more remote you are, the less likely the ill-prepared will be to expend the energy to find and take your provisions. There’s a trade-off though which is that the further you are from at least a small town, the fewer services are available. Also, without neighbors (who you may need to rely on to save your life someday or even just barter with) your survivability and quality of life might be diminished.

Re-Establishing a Culture of Preparedness

No individual, family, or group is an island. Ideally the largest step of the prepping pyramid would be a culture of preparedness wherein redundancy is built into every system that the population relies on for basic survival. It’s not utopian, a hundred years ago it was common sense. According to prominent prepper Stewart Rhodes in episode 602 of The Survival Podcast, “during the Cold War, this country had enough grain to feed all of its people for three years in the event of a nuclear winter, now they have enough to feed all of us half a loaf of bread.”
Our ancient and recent ancestors had the wisdom to live by the ways of the ant, not the grasshopper (see Aesop’s fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper”). In the modern survivalist movement, it’s accepted that winter is coming again as it has in the past and will in the future.
Apocalypse would be an easy way out, but in all likelihood, the world will continue to cycle with nature, not end. We’ll have to choose to be prepared. Moreover, it doesn’t take TEOTWAWKI (“the end of the world as we know it”) for any individual or family to experience an acute localized disaster. Be it a job loss, an injury, death of a loved one, etc, when the s**t his hit your fan, it’s your preps that will carry you through in a state of relative comfort and help buffer desperation.

Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast has provided numerous planning and strategy tools such as the “threat probability matrix” and notion of “disaster commonality” (see episode 166) to help people identify the threats that are most likely to occur in their personal lives, location, climate, etc. and understand that in many ways the fundamental preps and planning needed to survive anything from the “mundane to the insane” are the generally the same.
It’s important while prepping to be creative and make it fun-based not fear-based. Thanks to the modern survival movement there’s a fail-safe principle built-in which essentially states that whatever you do to be prepared for disaster should improve your quality of life whether or not s**t hits the fan! The best example is growing some portion of your own food.

Just avoid panic buying. As with Permaculture the best solutions are small and slow. Continually incrementally add to your preps when grocery items go on sale, when you get extra cash, when you can score something on Craigslist, when there’s a yard sale, etc. Start small, make it fun, get into the groove and you’ll enjoy having a more sensible lifestyle that actually empowers you to be an evermore safe, secure, confident, and dutiful cosmic citizen, community member, and family member.
